This painting shows the most important things in the works of Dutch painter Yvonne Heemskerk, female strength and the love for the material. Painted with oils and bitumen to give the layers a kind of roughness that she wants to have for showing what fire does.
The artist herself explains about this work:
Sharing my process and deeper feelings about my painting Judith. My first painting shown with my new found medium… tar(bitumen)!! The roughness of the material is the starter of it all. Underneath all these colors there is this wild, rough untamed sticky basic, that tries to get a grip on you, you have to find a way to work with it….take it or leave it!! Also a big part of the story about what happened before Judith did her thing with Holofernes. For me the tar is not “just a medium”, it is an important part of this story, but also about life itself. Many times in life we have to build up again or on top of things that shattered our lives, made us feel lost or deeply sad. We can’t close our eyes for these things that live in our shadow, they are part of what and who we are, how we grow out of it!l I am so thankful for everything that happened in my life, the happy but also the darker times, it made me to what I am today🖤

With her technique, which is loose on the one hand and very accurate on the other, Heemskerk knows how to express the power of women in a particularly striking way. Her use of color in, for example, the skin of her figures also contributes to this. It should also be mentioned that some of her works are surprisingly large in size, so you literally won't just pass them by!

Yvonne Heemskerk
Yvonne Heemskerk is not only a free visual artist but also a portrait painter. Moreover, she is very active and successful as a teacher in her painting school. She lives with her family in the village of Voorhout in the Bollenstreek. Heemskerk works with both oil and acrylic paint.
