Jantien de Boer
Sleepwalker - Contemporary Oil Painting of a Woman Seen From Under Water

About the Item

Jantien de Boer (1984, Classical Academy for Painting Groningen) likes to tell a story in her paintings. She freezes the moment that demands her attention. A newborn baby of 13 minutes old by you almost crying. The posing woman who turns her gaze away and turns to herself, alone with her thoughts, is immortalized in that stillness. But she also literally stops the image. In her water paintings, which often take place below the surface of the water, she does not rely on photographs but on film material. She investigates the movement of her models under water. The silence, the peace, the weightlessness and also the resistance that the water evokes. As modern water nymphs, her water-ladies wade, sink and sink through carefully composed underwater worlds. Sometimes the depth is unmistakably dark, sometimes fairy-tale-like with bright waterplants. The paintings by Jantien de Boer create a world of their own, in which reality and fantasy merge. It is theater: intended to create an experience that comes in. With a direct and accurate test she transfers that experience to the canvas. Jantien graduated in 2009 as art historian at the University of Groningen and then went to the Classical Academy for Visual Arts. She completed it in 2013. In her final year she received a scholarship from the Coba de Groot Foundation and a scholarship from the Hoedemaker-Labberté Fund. Since 2014 she has a permanent appointment as a teacher at the Classical Academy. In 2017 Jantien was nominated with no less than two paintings for the 1st Dutch Portrait Award and her work on Soestdijk Palace was shown. Her work can be seen permanently in our gallery. Paintings and sculptures will be shipped for free. We ship in a handmade wooden crate all over the world. Feel free to ask anything about this artist and her works.

  • Clair Seglem Bougie Portrait Painting of a Woman in Pink
    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
Doesn't this lovely piece remind you of the Notorious RBG? A lovely landscape portrait painting of a woman in pink which is one of our current favorite finds. The subject of this piece of artwork is a woman with reddish hair, pulled tightly back. She wears a light pink collared top, gold earrings and sports a bright red lip. The look on her face is stern, perhaps resting bitch face. The background is a deep emerald green. This piece is unsigned, however it has the subjects name on the right side in black. This piece is by the late Oklahoma artist and retired Air Force man Clair Seglem...

  • Portrait of a Young Gentleman and Pet Dog c.1680, Antique oil on Canvas Painting
    By (Circle of) Mary Beale
    Located in London, GB
The portrait genre was valued particularly highly in English society. Neither landscapes nor allegorical pictures were ever priced so highly at exhibitions and in the trade as depictions of people, from the highest aristocracy to scholars, writers, poets and statesmen. This charming portrait, presented by Titan Fine Art, of a fashionable young gentleman and his faithful pet is an excellent example of 17th century child portraiture in England. There is a remarkable beauty and sensitivity to the portrait. The face, particularly well rendered, has captured the character of this young man – both charming and at the same time mischievous. Only the playful attention of a small dog suggests anything less than patrician dignity. Symbolism was important in portraiture and it provided a pointed and aspirational narrative that would not have been lost on contemporary viewers. For example, the presence of the dog, which was likely the boy’s pet, is at once a charming pictorial device and also a clear allusion to fidelity, trust and loyalty. The hairstyle and the attire, notably the type of cravat with the blue ribbon, help to date this portrait to between 1670 to 1685. Until the late eighteenth century children were dressed as adults - boys were dressed like men in breeches, vests, and coats between four and seven years of age. The expensive lace is an indication to his family’s wealth. Held in a good quality and condition antique gilded frame. Born in Suffolk, Mary Beale, nee Cradock (1633-1699) was employed by many of the most distinguished persons of her time including nobility, landed gentry, and clergymen. Technically accomplished, her paintings are noteworthy for their honest and sympathetic portrayal. In 1651 she married Charles Beale...
