About the Item

The theme of "La Stanza" ("the Room"), from which the exhibition takes the title, wants to resume intimacy and introspection that only a domestic environment manages to give. The walls within which life takes place are at the same time protection and limit towards the outside, enclosing emotions and feelings, but also an impediment to bring our life "out". In the same way, the room is a metaphor of the body: in the figures portrayed very often there is no interaction, even if they pretend a "Girotondo" ("ring-around-the-rosey"), everyone is on his own, isolated from the context of which he is a passive spectator. Alfio Giurato, born in Catania in 1978, tells this sort of contemporary monadism: each entity is different from the other and represents a closed world, not influenced by the like or by the outside world, yet, in its independence it is part of a whole and strictly linked to the surrounding universe. The significant value of the form loses the aspiration to be mere representation of reality, taking charge of all doubts, of apathy, the alienation of that nihilistic feeling so present in the present day. To describe this world, the artist resorts to the thickness of the material, a stratification of oil that overlaps up to become mass, scratched, with a slow work of putting and removing, in an alternation of scratches and lumps of color, of tears and informal solutions. A real physical clash that is hired every time Alfio swore compares with the canvas. "Rooms" is also the title of a series of works exhibited in 2011 at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sicily, which mark the beginning of artistic research, characterized by monochrome colors and shapes emphasized by artificial lights. After twelve years, a significant evolution can be seen, in which matter becomes sculptural, intimism is strengthened by a radiant light, the figures slowly acquire identity, the interiors become scenography integrated into the story.
