Gustave Cariot’s Meule Ensoleillé showcases his signature Divisionist technique in a radiant rural landscape. A solitary haystack anchors the composition, bathed in golden sunlight and surrounded by vivid fields and trees. Cariot’s meticulous, pointillist brushwork creates a shimmering effect, capturing the atmosphere and movement of light. This work exemplifies the Neo-Impressionist approach to nature, merging structure with lyrical colour harmony. Gustave Cariot was a French Post-Impressionist and Pointillist painter whose luminous landscapes explored the poetic interplay of light, season, and atmosphere. A self-taught artist with a remarkable sensitivity to colour and structure, Cariot devoted his life to capturing the transient moods of the natural world rendering rural vistas, riverbanks, orchards and cities with a precision that was both scientific and deeply lyrical. From the banks of the Seine to the vineyards of the Rhine, his compositions radiate with a quiet intensity, offering collectors a vision that balances painterly innovation with timeless beauty. Born in the Marais district of Paris in 1872, near the historic Place des Vosges, Cariot grew up surrounded by artisans and merchants. His father, a luggage-maker, hoped to see his son follow in his trade. But from a young age, Cariot was captivated by art, and he rejected the family business in favour of a solitary, determined pursuit of painting. Largely self-taught, he spent his early years sketching in the city’s parks and streets, before expanding his practice into the surrounding countryside. Cariot’s breakthrough came when he began exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants in the early twentieth century. His meticulously structured compositions and shimmering surfaces attracted the attention of influential collectors, including Serguei Dmitrievitch Cheremeteff and Armand Cabrol. In 1903, his seminal series Le Poème des Saisons, comprising twelve paintings that charted the changing months, drew considerable acclaim at the Salon, establishing him as a painter of exceptional poetic vision. He continued to exhibit regularly in Paris, including with the Société des Artistes Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne, the Salon d’Hiver, and the Salon National des Beaux-Arts. In 1909, Cariot joined “La Société Moderne,” an artist-led group founded by his close friend Emmanuel de la Villéon, exhibiting with them at the Galeries Durand-Ruel. These exhibitions placed him in the orbit of progressive Post-Impressionist circles while distinguishing his work for its intellectual structure and atmospheric depth. Cariot’s painting technique reflects a hybrid of Pointillist methodology and Post-Impressionist clarity. He embraced the Divisionist approach to colour, applying tiny brushstrokes and layered dots to build up vibrant, luminous surfaces. Unlike some of his Neo-Impressionist contemporaries, however, Cariot often used subtle impasto to achieve texture and depth, particularly in elements like haystacks, trees, or cloud-filled skies. The result is a tactile richness that draws the eye into the surface, enhancing the experience of changing light. His colour palette is often anchored in cool violets, gentle greens, and ochres, shifting with the seasons and the hour. Whether painting the golden haze of a late-summer field or the pale light of a winter orchard, Cariot employed his technique to express time as much as place. His brushwork is controlled but never static, giving his paintings a rhythm that mirrors the natural world. Cariot’s lifelong fascination was the landscape in flux: fields under morning frost, the low sun of a November afternoon, a flowering orchard in April, or the spectral shimmer of a city at twilight. Inspired by Claude Monet’s series paintings, particularly those of haystacks and Rouen Cathedral, Cariot created several of his own, depicting the same locations at different times of day and year. His famous seasonal series, including Le Poème des Saisons, demonstrated his belief that nature could be explored not just through form, but through time. He painted widely across France, in Normandy, Brittany, and Île-de-France, and later travelled extensively in Germany, producing memorable images of the Rhine and the Moselle. Even during the hardship of the interwar years and the rise of political uncertainty, Cariot continued to seek out stillness in nature. His later years were spent between Paris and rural retreats, where he continued to produce views of rivers, vineyards, and provincial towns with remarkable consistency and clarity. Gustave Cariot’s work stands as a testament to the enduring power of colour, light, and disciplined observation. His blend of Pointillist technique and Post-Impressionist sensibility yielded paintings of profound atmosphere and structure, art that resonates with collectors for their serenity, balance, and radiant surface. In an era of stylistic upheaval, Cariot remained committed to his vision: a painter of quiet conviction who found infinite beauty in the turning of the seasons and the shifting of light. Today, his paintings continue to draw admiration for their timeless clarity and the meditative calm they bring to any collection.

Medieval Castle on a Cliff by the Sea on North Coast of Ireland by Irish Artist
Located in Preston, GB
Medieval Castle on a Cliff by the Sea on North Coast of Ireland by 20th Century Irish Artist, John Wright. An impressionistic impasto original oil painting of Dunce Castle, used in Game of Thrones. Art measures 24 x 18 inches Frame measures 34 x 28 inches This vibrant painting captures the dramatic beauty of a rugged coastal scene, dominated by an ancient castle perched atop a rocky cliff. The artist's dynamic brushwork and bold use of color bring the landscape to life, with the turquoise and blue hues of the sea contrasting against the warm, sunlit rocks and castle walls. The swirling water and textured rocks in the foreground add depth and movement, making the scene both captivating and lively. Encased in a classic gold-trimmed frame, this artwork is a striking piece that will add a touch of historical grandeur and natural beauty to any space. Dunluce Castle is a now-ruined medieval castle in Northern Ireland, the seat of Clan MacDonnell. It is located on the edge of a basalt outcropping in County Antrim and is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland. The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either side, which may have been an important factor to the early Christians and Vikings who were drawn to this place where an early Irish fort once stood. Dunluce is one of the most picturesque and romantic of Irish Castles. With evidence of settlement from the first millennium, the present castle ruins date mainly from the 16th and 17th Centuries. It was inhabited by both the feuding McQuillan and MacDonnell clans. Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, built the first castle at Dunluce, In the 13th century. The earliest features of the castle are two large drum towers about 9 metres (30 ft) in diameter on the eastern side, both relics of a stronghold built here by the McQuillans after they became lords of the "an Rúta" (territory) in the early 1500s. Later Dunluce Castle became the home of the chief of the Clan MacDonnell of Antrim and later John Mor MacDonald the 6th chief Clan Donald of Scotland. In 1584 with the passing off John Mor MacDonald, the Antrim Glens and Castle were seized by Sorley Boy MacDonnell, making it the seat again solely of the MacDonnell Clan. Sorley Boy took the castle, keeping it for himself and improving it in the Scottish style. Sorley Boy swore allegiance to the crown and his son Randal was made 1st Earl of Antrim by King James I. The Girona, a galleass (Ship) from the Spanish Armada, was wrecked in a storm on the rocks at Lacada Point on the night of 26 October 1588. Cannons from the ship were installed in the gatehouses and the rest of the cargo sold, funding restoration of the castle. Dunluce Castle served as the seat of the Earl of Antrim until the impoverishment of the MacDonnells in 1690, following the Battle of the Boyne...
