About the Item
This superb, large British Victorian oil painting is by noted Newlyn and Menton artist Arthur Alfred Burrington. It was painted circa 1890 when Burrington was most likely in Newlyn, having been encouraged to visit by his good friend Stanhope Forbes. The setting is a school interior where several children of a variety of ages have abandoned their books and teacher at the table to watch a Punch and Judy show through the window. The scene is painted in the muted palette of the Newlyn School with wonderful use of light, particularly on the table and through the window. A lovely Newlyn school painting with great detail and colouring and an excellent example of Burrington's work from that period.
Signed lower right.
Provenance: West Midlands estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 37 inches by 24 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 45 inches by 32 inches and in good condition.
Arthur Alfred Burrington ROI, RI 1856-1924. Burrington was born in Bridgwater, Somerset. Painter of landscapes, genre and flowers. The artist studied at South Kensington and at the Slade. He worked in Rome with Cipriani 1878 and in Paris with Lefebvre, Cormon, Boulanger and Bonnat. He lived for a period unspecified as yet in the West Country, and later in the South of France. He was a friend of Stanhope Forbes, from Quimperle, and Forbes encouraged he and his friend Tom Trythall Rowe to visit Newlyn soon after his own decision to stay in 1884. In September 1884 The Cornishman reported that there were 27 artists working in Newlyn, although Burrington did not turn up until 1885 and remained for a short time only in the West country. He died on 9 October 1924 in Garda, near Verona, Italy. Bednar has secured the Italian certificate verifying his death, and noted his earliest known date of a visit to West Cornwall from Forbes' letters of 1888. Burrington exhibited his works in England, France, Tasmania and America. Between 1888 and 1918 he exhibited 19 works at the Royal Academy London including in 1905 an oil which he considered his best work, 'The Fête of The Patron Saint in Castellar'. His other exhibitions included the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, London 162, Royal Institute of Painters in Oils, London 22 and a one-man exhibition of watercolours, 'In Gardens Fair and Meadows Sweet' in 1905 at the Leicester Galleries in London. This exhibition of 73 paintings included many of Menton and the surrounding districts as did his 1899 exhibition at the Fine Art Society in London, entitled 'A Season On The Riviera', again solely devoted to his pictures. He evidently fell in love with Menton and discovered its delights for an artist early in his professional life. Other exhibitions included the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool 19, Manchester City Art Galleries 10 Royal Birmingham Society of Artists 6 and the Royal West of England Academy Bristol 32. Other works were shown at the Paris Salon 1882 and 1898, the Franco-British Exhibition London in 1908, the St Louis International in 1905 and the Hobart International in Tasmania in 1896 as well as The New Gallery London.

Out of Mischief - British Victorian 1891 art interior portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This absolutely charming exhibited British Victorian oil painting is by female artist Maria Louisa Angus. Painted in 1891, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. The composition is an interior scene with two young girls on a sofa, looking at a picture book and keeping 'out of mischief' as it is entitled. The room holds an exotic mix of oriental objects and a gorgeous umbrella plant in a gleaming terracotta pot. The girls themselves are sat on a beautifully detailed fur throw, looking at a book, with a marine painting on the wall behind them. The brushwork and colouring are superb and the pink of the older girl's dress is picked up throughout the room. A really lovely painting by a very talented Victorian female artist.

Provenance:
William Drummond;
Private collection.
Probably painted in 1864, the present work evokes the peaceful contentment of everyday family life, with its small scale further reinforcing the intimacy of the scene. It is one of a series of small intimate family scenes produced during this happy period of his life. A male figure, possibly the artist’s himself, slumbers in a chair, a handkerchief draped over his face whilst Susan, the artist’s young wife reads by the window. Their child, either Arthur or Georgina, plays on the floor with a discarded newspaper. The room is at 4 Adelaide Villas, St Mary’s Grove, Richmond, the house Arthur and Susan moved to shortly after their marriage in 1861. The chaise and window, with its pots of geraniums, also feature in the 1864 painting Coach and Horses (private collection) which depicts Susan, with her hair down, playing with Arthur and Georgina. A pot of daffodils placed beside the same geraniums in the present work suggest it may have been painted in the spring of that year. Such domestic bliss would shortly come to a tragic end when Susan died of pyaemia following the birth of their third child in June 1864.
Houghton was born in India, the son of a captain in the East India Company’s marine service. Both is father and older brother were accomplished military draughtsmen and he probably received early training from them. His family returned to England in the early 1850s and he began studies at Leigh’s and the Langham...
