About the Item

Very Large Antique Spanish Orientalist Oil Painting of Alcázar Seville Hidalgo Spanish, Late 19th Century Canvas: Height 91cm, width 68cm Frame: 112cm, width 89.5, depth 6cm This captivating oil painting by Spanish artist Fernando Liger Hidalgo (1880–1945) offers a richly detailed view of the historic Alcázar of Seville. Dating from the late 19th century, the work beautifully captures a tranquil palace courtyard, where a graceful fountain commands attention at the forefront. Behind it, an ornate façade is rendered in a harmonious palette of warm browns and soft creams, contrasted with vivid touches in the geometric tilework and intricate wall embellishments. Through a central archway, a lush garden is glimpsed, its greenery adding a vibrant focal point to the composition. Notably, heraldic symbols are positioned near the top of the piece, offering an uncommon yet evocative historical detail. The Alcázar has deep historical roots, originating as a Muslim fortress built in the 11th century. Over the centuries, it was expanded and reimagined under various rulers. The section portrayed here reflects the artistic patronage of King Peter of Castile, who, between 1364 and 1366, invited Arab and Berber artisans to construct new additions to the palace. Their work embraced the Mudéjar style—a unique blend of Islamic and Christian design that flourished in Iberian Christian territories from the 13th to 16th centuries. King Peter’s deep appreciation for Islamic artistry is evident in the refined architecture immortalised by Hidalgo. The painting is signed ‘F. Liger / Sevilla’ in the lower right corner and is housed in a finely carved giltwood frame that enhances its grandeur and historical character. Together, these elements underscore the artist’s meticulous attention to both craftsmanship and authenticity. Impressive in scale and rich in narrative detail, this work is an exquisite example of 19th century Spanish painting. Provenance: Sotheby's London sale L03103, 18 November 2003, Lot 252

Group portrait painting after the hunt, oil on canvas
Located in London, GB
This charming painting depicts a group of gentlemen gathered around a kitchen table and admiring an English Setter. The snowy rooftops, just visible from the kitchen window, combined with the lit fire and holly decorating the picture frames in the room, implies that this is a Christmas scene. It also appears that the gentlemen have just returned from a fox hunt, and are now warming themselves, drinking port and smoking long pipes by the fire. Five men — three gathered behind the table and two standing in front — are identically dressed in long black riding boots...

Early 20th Century English Oil Painting of a Chapel by Frank Moss Bennett
By Frank Moss Bennett
Located in London, GB
Early 20th century English oil painting of a chapel by Frank Moss Bennett English, 1918 Canvas: Height 35cm, width 25cm Frame: Height 57cm, width 47cm, depth 6cm This atmospheric oil on canvas by noted English painter Frank Moss Bennett (1874–1952) captures the quiet beauty of the Martyn Chapel within St Mary’s Church, Puddletown, Dorset. Known for his affinity for architectural subjects and historical scenes, Bennett presents here a masterful interpretation of medieval ecclesiastical design. Executed in November 1918, the painting demonstrates Bennett’s refined technique and keen eye for architectural accuracy. His skill in manipulating colour and light is evident throughout the work, particularly in the vivid portrayal of the chapel’s stained-glass window. Multicoloured light dances across the aged stonework, adding warmth and depth to the sacred interior. St Mary’s Church, originally built during the Norman period, retains many 12th century features alongside elements from later restorations. Bennett was deeply inspired by Dorset’s heritage buildings and natural scenery, and this location featured frequently in his body of work. The canvas is presented in a richly carved giltwood frame. It is signed and dated ‘FMB / Nov 1918’ at the lower right and inscribed on the reverse with the title ‘The Martyn Chapel, St. Mary’s, Puddletown’. An artist’s biography is also affixed to the back. This fine example of early 20th century British painting...
