About the Item

Kamal Mitra - Untitled - 17 x 14 inches (unframed size) Acrylic on Canvas Inclusive of shipment in a roll form. About Kamal Mitra’s Works : While pursuing his Bachelors (Painting) at the Govt. College of Art & Craft, Mitra simultaneously was very interested in printmaking. Abundantly curious he wanted to develop himself as a graphic artist too. Kamal’s works are preoccupied with addressing the agonies and depressions of the human mind. He feels that a common destiny that people seem to share is the extreme hardships and ups and downs that inevitably dominate each one of our lives and perhaps the only common destiny that people share today. Athough highly influenced by the Expressionist movement of the west, Kamal has never been one to portray sentimental exaggerations. In fact, Mitra Says his search is towards a more expressive anatomy. In his paintings and etchings, Mitra gives equal importance to the content of his work as well as its pictorial /visual and tactile influences on people. Although he believes strongly in his content, which he wishes to convey, he is never rigid about content alone. He gives equal preference to the content and pictorial / visual aspect, as he believes that unless the image making is perfect, the representational image of the theme will be a complete failure. How he works : Mitra most definitely builds his works with a preconceived image in his mind composed appropriately to bring forth the concept as well as great visual appeal. The figures of men women & children in his works have a definite attitude as well as positioning. Mitra derives pleasure from creating an intense tension through the attitude and positioning of the subjects. The Body plays the main expressive medium. A Torso or simply the back, hands, toes, the intricacy of the veins on their bodies are modes through which Mitra tries to bring forth tension and pressure in the daily life of a human being. Mitra has been specially influenced by artists like Egon Schiele, Kathe Kollwitch, Gustav Klimt who successfully used the body in their carefully balanced compositions. Through both his paintings & graphics Mitra brings forth and searches for a more expressive anatomy. About the Artist & his works : Born : 1964 in Kolkata. The Odds, Acrylic on canvas, Brown, Blue, Green, Contemporary Artist "In Stock"
By Joydip Sengupta
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Joydip Sengupta - The Odds - 30 x 30 inches (unframed size) Acrylic on Canvas. Style : His artistic devices are drawn from a range of sources, such as Kalighat paintings and ancient philosophical texts. Of course, his concerns are very much contemporary like the impact of globalization leading to economic marginalization and cultural degradation. His photo realistic works draw from images related to contemporary Indian life, building complex puzzles and weaving together myriad experiences and influences as imbibed by the artist. The motifs in his paintings are rather complex. According to his “I primarily work on Paper and Canvas. My chosen mediums of expression are Watercolour, Gouache, Acrylic and Oil paints. I am also engaged in photography, filmmaking, sculpture and installations.” Conceptually, the immediacy of the drawn image alongside elaboration of the painted surface; balance the overall process of image making with anecdotes and mystery motifs. The interlocking of juxtaposed drawings with the painted surface steadily blurs the certainty of the known from the unknown. An altered sense of reality emerges. The human psyche perceives to the extent of what it may see and beyond that spectrum is the unknown, which is an anxious state of being. The notion of the self within a contained form is bound by the limits of time and to embrace its fleeting nature is a challenge. We are able to justify the presence of reality by assigning identities to it and a strong sense of the self is built around them. From within the illusions of a complex network, we are often reminded that life is fleeting. The surplus and grandeur of modern culture shifts your attention to make-believe realities where the nature of the self is packaged in everlasting youthfulness and happy living. About the Artist & his works : Born : 1973 in New Delhi. Education : 2001 : Completed MFA from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Scotland, UK. 2000 : MFA from the College of Art, New Delhi, India 1998 : BFA from the Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India.
