About the Item

This fantastic British 1940's figurative interior oil painting is by noted artist Leonard Fuller. Painted circa 1940, the colourful composition is looking into a busy Woolworths store with their trade mark wooden floors and counters. The aisles are packed with mostly women and children choosing the famous pick and mix sweets, but there's also a sailor and dog amongst the crowds. Behind the counters are several Woolworths store assistants in their brown uniforms. One wall is decorated with colourful parasols. The brushwork and details are superb. Fuller has perfectly captured the hustle and bustle of the store that many of us will remember from our own childhoods. Woolworths was a British high-street retail chain that first opened in 1909, in Liverpool. The Woolworths store chain was originally a division of the American F. W. Woolworth Company until its sale in the early 1980s, it had more than 800 stores in the UK prior to closure. Woolworths sold many different items. They were also well known for selling pick 'n' mix sweets. It was sometimes referred to as Woolies by the UK media, the general public, and occasionally in its own television adverts. Woolworths ran in to major financial difficulties in 2007/8. On 17 December 2008, administrators announced that all 807 Woolworths stores would close by 5 January 2009 (later changed to 6 January), with 27,000 job losses. However, it was announced in 2024 that Woolworths may make a return 15 years after its closure, when the German company announced its expansion throughout Europe. Signed lower right. Provenance. Fuller was educated at Dulwich College and then studied at the RA Schools between 1912-14. He won the British Institute Scholarship in painting in 1913 and subsequently attend the Clapham School of Art. During WWI, he became friends with Borlase Smart. After the war Fuller returned to study at the RA from 1919 to 1921. During this time, he married the artist Marjorie Mostyn, known as Nancy, who was the daughter of the artist Tom Mostyn. From 1922-32 Fuller taught art at St John's Wood Art Schools. He also exhibited at the Paris Salons where he was a Silver medalist. Fuller also taught at his old school, Dulwich College from 1927- to 1937. His friend from WW1, Borlase Smart, persuaded him to come to St Ives, and with his wife he established the St Ives School of Painting in1938. Fuller was also a Founder member of the Penwith Society of Artists. He painted a superb oil portrait of Terry Frost and Son which is part of the permanent collection of the Newlyn Art Gallery. Full details of his important contributions to the St Ives art colony and to the crucial role he played during and after World War II is best found in Tovey (2003) pp94-6. Fuller died in St Ives. The Artist's Studio - Scottish 1914 Glasgow Boy art exh interior oil painting
By Alexander Roche
Located in London, GB
This superb RSA exhibited Scottish Edwardian interior oil painting is by Glasgow Boy artist Alexander Ignatius Roche. It was painted circa 1914 when Roche was living at 8 Royal Terrace, on Calton Hill, a very prestigious property in Edinburgh, now the Halcyon Hotel. The painting is a view of Roche's studio, quite possibly one of the rooms at the above address. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy the following year, no. 333 entitled The Studio. The painting shows Roche beneath the vast window in his studio against a red wall that meets pale floorboards. Various items and furniture are scattered about. The balance of the white window and pale floorboards with the red wall intersecting is perfect. A really lovely example of this great Glasgow Boy artist's work and a very personal piece showing his inner sanctum. Signed lower right. Provenance. Exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy 1915 no. 333, entitled The Studio. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 32 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Alexander Ignatius Roche RSA NEAC RP (1861-1921) was a Scottish artist in the late 19th century and an important figure in the “Glasgow Boys. He was born in the Gallowgate in Glasgow, the son of a milliner, Alexander Roche. He attended St Mungo’s Academy in Bridgeton, Glasgow. He originally trained as an architect, but then changed to art, studying at the Glasgow School of Art and, from 1881, at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Here he studied under Gustave Boulanger and Jean-Leon Gerome. In his time here he befriended William Kennedy, John Lavery, Thomas Millie Dow and William Stott. In the early 1880s he joined a colony of Scots artists in Grez-sur-Loing south of Fontainebleau. On his return to Scotland in 1885 he joined with the Glasgow Boys working on murals for the 1888 International Exhibition. In 1888 he travelled to Capri where he befriended Fabio Fabbi and Harold Speed. In following years he visited both Venice and Florence, and married an Italian girl on the latter trip. This marriage was short-lived and they separated. As both were Catholics there seems to have never been any divorce. In 1896 he moved from Glasgow to Edinburgh and began to distance himself from the Glasgow Boys. His work drifted from largely landscape to portraits. In 1906 he remarried (possibly bigamously), to Jean Alexander, daughter of Robert Alexander. During this period they enjoyed the friendship of Joseph Crawhall...

London Costmongers, Urban 20th Century English Oil
Located in London, GB
Attributed to Mary Adshead 1904 - 1995 London Costmongers Oil on canvas Image size: 30 x 36 inches Framed Costermongers were London people that sold fruit and veg and other ‘perishables’ from barrows. Often wheeling and then stationing their barrow on the street, so their customers could easily come and buy from them. Costermongers were fiercely independent, rebellious in their dress and outlook, and had little time for ‘middle class moralising’ and attempts to suppress or restrict their way of life. (Much like modern teenagers) The men depicted stop work for a break with cups of tea and a few read the newspapers. Next to the man with the yellow apron can be seen some cakes on a plate. A work place , a factory can be seen in the distance on the right. It is possible that the painting depicts a cabmen's shelter, as some did serve outside and many still survive today in London. The style of the painting is very much that of a student of the Slade School in London and has similarities with other artists work such as James Batemen or Herbert Ashwin Budd. On the back of the painting it has in chalk the name 'Rhoades', which could refer to the artist Geoffrey Hamilton Rhoades...
