Signed lower left, 'Millicent Tomkins' for Millicent Hanson Tomkins (American, 1930-2021) and dated 1959.
Millicent Tomkins began painting at a young age and, as a child, was awarded a total of six scholarships to the San Francisco Museum of Art. She subsequently attended the University of California at Berkeley where she received her Masters of Art Degree. Over a long career, both as artist and musician, she exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. These included First Prize for Fine Art at the Marin County Annual Fair in California and an Honorable Mention at the Palm Desert Museum's National Juried Exhibition. She also received the Individual Artist Grant in Painting from Marin County, Ca, the Gold Discovery Award for Traditional Painting presented by Art of California Magazine and the annual Life Time Achievement in the Arts Award from Mill Valley, Ca. For many years, Millicent Tomkins painted and sketched at her working studio in Moab, Utah, while maintaining her exhibition studio in Mill Valley, California.
This work is accompanied by an original photograph showing the subject seated in the interior from which the painting was modeled.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, this California painter and printmaker moved to Los Angeles in 1933. Jerry Opper graduated from Hollywood High School and worked as a set painter in the movie industry while studying art at the Chouinard Institute. During the war, he was stationed in Colorado where he enrolled in the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. After the war, he returned to Los Angeles where he worked again in the film industry. In 1947, he moved to San Francisco where he studied full-time at the California School of Fine Arts and was awarded his diploma in June of 1950.
Opper exhibited widely and with success including at the Drawing and Print Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association in 1950 and again in 1951 when he was awarded the Artists' Council Prize.
