About the Item

This is a very nicely rendered interior scene by an American artist with a very inspiring and interesting background. Richard H Bassett was born in 1900 on the campus of Trinity College, now Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina. His father, John Spencer Bassett, was a well known historian at Trinity, but he got into a little bit of hot water when Richard was around seven years old. The elder Bassett published an article supporting equal rights for African Americans that stirred up a local controversy, given the politics of the time in this Southern town and state. Although Professor Bassett was supported by Trinity, there became mounting resignation pressure from local politicians and townspeople that ultimately forced the Bassett family to leave North Carolina and re-establish in Northampton, Massachusetts at its prized institution, Smith College, where John Bassett became the new head of its History Department. A few years later, young Richard was taken to Europe in 1911 by his mother, settling first in Switzerland and then Paris. He studied art under several masters before returning to the US and enrolling at Harvard. He finished studies there and returned to Europe for additional training. Finally, in 1926, he returned to the family house in Northampton and began his American career as an artist. Bassett established a studio in New York and exhibited at New York galleries and the Art Students League. He also decorated many homes in New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania as well as Florida. In 1937, Bassett married Henrietta Durant, from Charleston, South Carolina and they established household in Beacon Hill, Boston. He exhibited local scenes of Boston at fine galleries locally. In 1945, he founded and headed the art department at Milton Academy for the next twenty years. The family lived in Milton. Richard Bassett returned to Paris at age 92 and reconnected with some of his early art establishments from some 70 years previously. He died in 1998 at the fine age of 98. The estate held his remaining works privately until 2011. This lovely painting is believed to be the interior of his bedroom at 58 Pommeroy Terrace, Northampton, where his family lived at the time. It is adjacent to the grounds of Smith College. Richard nicely captured the furnishings of a side of his room. The pale yellow wall and white trim is offset by the painted wood floor and the blue painted ceiling. The large framed engraving hanging above the mantel is so beautifully done that the glare in the glass of a window reflection from the opposite wall seems convincingly realistic as well. This clearly shows Bassett’s interior design and rendering abilities. The small landscape painting to the right is very likely one of his as well. Lastly, the Victorian Renaissance marble top washstand is a nice piece of furniture to be highlighted, surrounded by the mantel and in front of the closed up fireplace. The painting is oil on board, dates to circa 1926 and measures 15” x 20”. Though not signed, there is an estate stamp on the back that attests to its authenticity. Also, written in pencil, surely by the artist at the time is the address “58 Pommeroy Terr. Northampton”. The frame is a turn of the century white glazed wood variety with a gilded beaded outside edge. The painting is in very good condition with no issues to report, other than the fact that it wasn’t quite painted to the top and bottom edges of the board. Therefore there are 1/4” areas top and bottom that show bare board. This is barely noticeable when viewed from any distance. The frame is also in good condition with only a couple of small chips, here and there. Overall framed dimensions are just over 18” x 23”. This interior scene period oil painting would be a nice complement to any fine architecturally designed room or space. The story of its artist is equally interesting as well.
