Original cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, January 5, 1957.
The Post described, ““I wish to establish.” cries Dick Sargent, “that my wife is one of the best cooks in these United States!” All right, nobody is arguing. Maybe this explains how Sargent achieved such a frantically mouth watering expression on the face of Foxy, the dog; he had that tableful of taste-bud provocation in his studio for days without being able to do anything about it but paint it—so maybe he imagined what he would look like with a dog’s face, and executed a self-portrait…. Well, Foxy, as this is New Year’s-tide, when everybody should be happy, grab a few slices of ham and an orange basket, and go someplace fast. The hostess will recover, and join the other humans there in feeling happy too. In this year-turning time, may all the humans in every home feel likewise, and all the Foxys too.”

Richard Sargent
Richard 'Dick' Sargent, one of The Saturday Evening Post’s most prolific illustrators, was a Midwesterner born in Moline, Illinois, on March 26, 1911. His early career in art began just after his graduation from Moline High School when he went to work for a local printing and engraving plant. While there, Sargent attended night classes at the Moline Illinois Art School, the foundation for his future career as an artist. Sargent then studied at the Corcoran School of Art, and in 1951, he completed his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post, “Truth About Santa,” for the December 15 Christmas issue. While Sargent’s popularity grew through the exposure he received with the Post, he also did illustration work for magazines such as Fortune, Woman’s Day, Photoplay, and American Magazine among others. Americans adored Sargent and his art for his ability to show relatable, pregnant scenes with open-ended conclusions that commented on the situational comedy of life. In the late 1960s he retired to the Andalusia region of Spain and died there in 1978.

"Every Sunday, Mowbray and the boy had dinner together"
By Tom Lovell
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Approximate Date: 1957
Medium: Oil on Board
Signature: Signed Lower Left
Size: 18.70" x 27.00"
Story illustration for The Master Move by George Loveridge, published in Good Housekeeping, November 1957.
An excerpt from the story reads: “In the evening Mowbray dined at a mahogany table designed to seat ten persons. To his left, in an intricate, gilded frame, hung an oil portrait of his father — a man with a majestic, full gray beard and the same beaked nose that his son had, but with milder eyes (p. 237)…Every Sunday, Mowbray and the boy had dinner together, the two of them at the long, broad, polished table under the eyes of Peter Mowbray. Mowbray often had to fly hundreds of miles to be on time for Sunday dinner with his son, but he did not once fail to be there.” (p. 239-240)

"Happy New Year!", The Progressive Farmer Magazine Cover
By Arthur Sarnoff
Located in Fort Washington, PA
The Progressive Farmer magazine cover, January 1958
This dynamic scene of a mid-century New Year's Eve party captures the excitement across generations. While adults eagerly anticipate midnight, children watch from the staircase, and an older couple in the background enjoys a quiet moment together at the buffet table. Sarnoff's use of diagonals brings the scene to life, and the inclusion of noisemakers evokes the festive atmosphere. Created as a cover for the January 1958 issue of The Progressive Farmer, this is a prime example of Sarnoff's vibrant style.
