Thanks to the Virgen of San Juan, Ex-Voto, Retablo, Painting on Metal, Mexico

1950

About the Item

This retablo was purchased by the gallery in Mexico City. I knew the family that sold the retablo to me. It is dated 1853 because the story on the retablo was passed down for generations and a relative of Lourdes painted it in her memory. The description on the ex-voto reads: "Thanks to the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos that I have a new job with my new bosses. That they like my food and they don't mind what I prepare for them. " It is in excellent condition. It is framed behind conservatorship glass. The framed size is 14" x 15". The class should only be cleaned with ammonia free cleaner. An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or to a divinity; the term is usually restricted to Christian examples. It is given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshiper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. The destinations of pilgrimages often include shrines decorated with ex-votos. Ex-votos can take a wide variety of forms. They are not only intended for the helping figure, but also as a testimony to later visitors of the received help. As such they may include texts explaining a miracle attributed to the helper, or symbols such as a painted or modeled reproduction of a miraculously healed body part, or a directly related item such as a crutch given by a person formerly lame. There are places where a very old tradition of depositing ex-votos existed, such as Abydos in ancient Egypt. Especially in the Latin world, there is a tradition of votive paintings, typically depicting a dangerous incident which the offeror survived. The votive paintings of Mexico are paralleled in other countries. In Italy, where more than 15,000 ex-voto paintings are thought to survive from before 1600, these began to appear in the 1490s, probably modelled on the small predella panels below altarpieces. These are a form of folk art, in Mexico typically painted cheaply on tin plates salvaged from packaging. Look at images for other retablos below. They are listed on 1stdibs.

Winesap, Abstract Impressionism, Oil, 30 x 30, Light, Framed,

I believe I share with the majority of painters a tremendous love of the abstract stuff of the world that painting addresses: edges, planes, masses, forms, lines, passages, light and shadow. My inspiration for painting comes from direct observation of this “stuff.” The subject for a painting can be anything, but it helps to love the subject and to spend a lot of time with it. Even more important than the choice of subject is to find a relatively quiet, secure, solitary place to work. I have always loved looking out of windows...

Encuentro, Monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl, Mexico, Oil on canvas,
Located in Houston, TX
Encuentro by Mercedes Ayala is an oil painting most like painted at the Monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl. The Monasteries consists of fourteen monasteries built on or near the Popocatépetl volcano in central Mexico in the sixteenth century by members of the Franciscan, Dominican and Augustinian orders. They were a major factor in the Christianization of a large population over a vast territory and in a short period of time. These 14 monasteries cover over 150 miles (242 kilometers) of land southeast of Mexico City; 11 in the state of Morelos and three in Puebla state. It was impossible to photograph but behind the second monk is a third monk and you can barely see the candle. This is an oil on canvas and painted in her studio in Mexico D.F. Excellent Condition Commentary of her work: Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin "Emphasizing the light; the inner light of the being where fragile and subtle figures of angelic appearance inhabit magical beings guardians of good, monks or sages, reminiscences that refuse to disappear. Figures that contrast faintly on a background, almost always dominated by suggestive colors of the night space or of the first morning flashes. Mercedes Ayala Gress, Artist of a high sensitivity as befits her to a great family of Artists… Meche as we fraternally call her, is an artist of a magnificent plastic domain and her work has recreated the greatness of our national landscapes and with great affection that of our Tlaxcalteca land, recreating with emotion in those novo Hispanic...

Ex Voto; Miraculous Intervention of a Difficult Pregnacy, 19th Century Retablo
Located in Denver, CO
This authentic 19th-century Mexican ex-voto is a powerful testament to faith and survival, painted in oil on tin with ink circa 1869 by an anonymous Mexican artist. It is elegantly displayed in a custom, hand-carved frame enhancing its historical and artistic significance. The ex-voto itself measures 6 ½ x 9 ¾ inches, while the outer frame spans 14 ¼ x 17 ½ inches, making it a compelling piece for collectors of religious folk art. A Miraculous Healing – A Story of Devotion The heartfelt inscription tells the story of Mrs. Dia Anacleto Rodriguez, who, in 1860, faced a life-threatening childbirth with little hope of survival. Israeli Folk Art Oil Painting Pomegranates Naive Style Still Life Hedva Yardeni
Located in Surfside, FL
Framed 29.5 X 37.25 sight 28.5 X 36.25 Hedva Yardeni was born in 1969 in Jerusalem to a traditional jewish family. She grew up in Jerusalem, Israel. During 2004 yardeni settled in los angeles, on this time Yardeni's work was based on images, landscapes and jewish symbols taken from her childhood in Jerusalem. The dominant motif in her work is the pomegranate. In the jewish – Israeli tradition, a myriad of symbolic meanings has been ascribed to the pomegranate. This humble fruit signifies the land of israel and the revival of the jewish people. It is the symbol of the land's wealth and prosperity. Yardeni returned to Israel in 2005, settling in the galilee. She rediscovered the exquisite beauty of her home land and let the full expression of her deep love to Jerusalem from her soul and onto the canvas. Her recent work is full of light and joy reflect an inner spirit that is always reaching towards the Almighty. They are more abstract, pure and radiant with light. Her work has a naive, whimsical, folk art quality to it. Yardeni grew up in Jerusalem and completed her BA in art at Kay academy Beer Sheva, and my MA at Schechter Institute of jewish Studies...
