A delightful genre painting of two Italian women next to a Vineyard by Karel Frans Philippeau. The scene depicts a women carrying a basket of wine grapes talking to a mother holding a sleeping baby.
Karel Frans Philippeau was born in Amsterdam on 31 August 1825 to Franciscus Rolandus Philippeau and Maria Carolina Luraschi. Little is known about his early life but he studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He began exhibiting in Amsterdam with genre works from 1848 and at the Hague from 1849 before travelling to Italy in 1850. There he spent time in Rome, Venice and then Florence where he studied the old masters.
Philippeau was captivated by the Italian way of life and began painting scenes of rural families who often spent their time outside engaged in communal activities. Whilst on his travels, he continued to send paintings to be exhibited at the Hague. After returning to Amsterdam in 1855, he continued working as an artist and enjoyed considerable success, becoming a member of the Dutch artist’s society ‘Arti et Amicitiae’.
He later moved to Princenhage in the North Brabant province of the south Netherlands and on 2 May 1867, he married Hariette Antoinette Marie Therese England in Roermond. In addition to exhibiting in his home country, he also exhibited in England at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in 1865 and 1867, Leeds in 1868, Liverpool in 1869 and the British Institution in 1873 as well as at other London galleries. He also taught art to a number of students including Willem Witsen, Johannes Frederik Hulk junior, Betsy Repelius and Cato van Hoorn.
Philippeau died in Princenhage on 10 April, 1897.
His works are held by a number of public art collections including the Glasgow Museum, Manchester Art Gallery and the Mint Museum in the US.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears an old label [sic] stating the painting is from the collection of Mrs Kemp Welch, 1886, and was most likely taken from an auction catalogue at the time. The panel also retains an old Christie’s stencil verso.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

A wonderful historical painting of a roundhead soldier standing outside a fortress by Ernest Crofts. The soldier is depicted wearing a back and breast plate over a red and yellow sleeved jacket tied with a sash around his waist. On his head, he wears a felt hat with red and white feathers and holds a sword in his hand. He is shown standing at the moated entrance of a fortified stone building with a portcullis. Beyond the raised portcullis, a group of soldiers can be seen in the shadows. The soldier’s uniform is typical of Cromwell’s famous ‘Ironside’ cavalry and indicates he is an officer, who, in Cromwell’s time would have earned his place based on merit rather than social status. A delightful genre painting of a family playing a game of cards by James Hardy Jnr. A group of people are depicted sitting at a table in front of a fireplace in a rustic interior, playing cribbage. As four of the players study their cards, a woman gets up to help another player with their hand. Meanwhile, a tan and white dog watches on with interest.
The reverse of this painting includes a handwritten inscription which reads: ‘This painting was purchased by the late Mr Taylor for £40 and bought by me at Public Auction at Addison Hall for £45. March 1907. F. C. Mander’. Further research has discovered that a public auction of the collection of a Mr J Taylor Esq was held by his Executors on Tuesday 5 March 1907 at Addison Hall, Addison Road, Kensington. Note:
We are grateful to Mr Fred Meijer for his attribution to Ludolf de Jongh
Ludolf de Jongh was the son of a shoemaker. When his father moved to Rotterdam, the young Ludolf decided to learn art rather than shoemaking and became a pupil of Cornelis Saftleven. Later he studied under Anthony Palamedes in Delft and still later with Jan van Bijlert in Utrecht.
In 1635 he travelled to France with Francis Bacon. Seven years later, in 1642, he returned to the Netherlands when he heard that his mother had fallen ill. He set up a shop in Rotterdam, and his earliest signed paintings date from that year.
According to Houbraken, his travels had caused him to speak French so fluently, that his parents had to learn French in order to speak with him.
De Jongh’s work shows a strong influence from the Utrecht school of Caravaggio admirers, especially Jacob Duck...

Portrait of a girl with a rose and a red coral necklace
With traces of the artist’s signature and annotated AETATIS S.V. 2 1⁄2 Ao 1631
Oil on panel, H. 104.5 x 79.5 cm
Provenance:
Purchased by Jonkheer Helenus Marius Speelman (1857-1909), Kasteel de Wittenburg; thence by
descent
The work shows a strong resemblance to a portrait by Finsonius in the North Brabant Museum. This
signed and dated "Girl with Basket and Cherries" (Inv. 15529), was painted just a year later, in 1632.
Not only are the paintings remarkably similar in overall size and format, in painting style, and in the
positioning of the girls in full length in their white lace dresses. They are also connected by the
iconographic scheme of the respective coral necklaces, each with a gold memorial medal hanging
from it. Although they are of course individuals, the faces are very similar in their depictions of
features such as eyes, nose, and lips. This points to the same technique applied by the same painter.
Finally, the handwriting is almost the same on the works by Finsonius known so far.
