A delightful genre painting of two Italian women next to a Vineyard by Karel Frans Philippeau. The scene depicts a women carrying a basket of wine grapes talking to a mother holding a sleeping baby.
Karel Frans Philippeau was born in Amsterdam on 31 August 1825 to Franciscus Rolandus Philippeau and Maria Carolina Luraschi. Little is known about his early life but he studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He began exhibiting in Amsterdam with genre works from 1848 and at the Hague from 1849 before travelling to Italy in 1850. There he spent time in Rome, Venice and then Florence where he studied the old masters.
Philippeau was captivated by the Italian way of life and began painting scenes of rural families who often spent their time outside engaged in communal activities. Whilst on his travels, he continued to send paintings to be exhibited at the Hague. After returning to Amsterdam in 1855, he continued working as an artist and enjoyed considerable success, becoming a member of the Dutch artist’s society ‘Arti et Amicitiae’.
He later moved to Princenhage in the North Brabant province of the south Netherlands and on 2 May 1867, he married Hariette Antoinette Marie Therese England in Roermond. In addition to exhibiting in his home country, he also exhibited in England at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in 1865 and 1867, Leeds in 1868, Liverpool in 1869 and the British Institution in 1873 as well as at other London galleries. He also taught art to a number of students including Willem Witsen, Johannes Frederik Hulk junior, Betsy Repelius and Cato van Hoorn.
Philippeau died in Princenhage on 10 April, 1897.
His works are held by a number of public art collections including the Glasgow Museum, Manchester Art Gallery and the Mint Museum in the US.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears an old label [sic] stating the painting is from the collection of Mrs Kemp Welch, 1886, and was most likely taken from an auction catalogue at the time. The panel also retains an old Christie’s stencil verso.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles.
Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879.
During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co.
He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum.

A delightful genre painting of two women with flowers by William Oliver. The young women can be seen in a garden setting posed next to an arrangement of spring flowers on a wooden stool. One of the women is shown seated on a grassy bank wearing a white dress with flowers in her hair. The other, dressed in green stands beside her holding a posy of flowers.
William Oliver was born William Oliver Williams at Worcester in 1823 to William and Jane Williams (née Oliver). Both his parents were from Wales but had relocated to Worcester where his father worked as a chemist before becoming a surgeon. Oliver showed a talent for art at an early age and when the family later moved to Birmingham he began working at the Government School of Design, where he later became the assistant master.
In 1848, he moved to London where he enrolled at the Royal Academy and was admitted to the RA school on 16 December, 1848. Whilst there, he married Jane Hughes on 30 December, 1852. The couple lived in St Pancras and went on to have 10 children. Two of their sons, William Oliver Williams, known as Oliver Rhys (1854-1907) and Reginald Arthur Williams or Reginald Arthur (1862-1899), also became artists.
Oliver began exhibiting in 1851 under his full name William Oliver Williams at the British Institution and in 1858 made his debut at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited around the country at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Glasgow Institute, Manchester Art Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In the early 1850’s he won a commission from the Arundel Society to travel to Italy to draw Giotto’s fresco in Padua and other classical works. He later used his knowledge to incorporate Roman and Greek themes into his paintings, particularly fabrics and costumes.
Sometime during the early 1860’s he was declared bankrupt and moved his family to Corwen in Wales and later to Aberystwyth near to be closer to where his parents had retired. Perhaps prompted by this, he began signing his works William Oliver from 1867 and resumed exhibiting at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. By 1872, his circumstances had improved and he returned to London, residing in the St John’s Wood area. He spent his final years living at 41 Queens gate Gardens, Kensington where he died on 16 April, 1901.
Examples of his work are held by a number of public collections including the Aberystwyth University School of Art, Atkinson Art Gallery, Birmingham Museum, Bradford Museum, Kirklees Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, National Museum, Cardiff, Parc Howard Museum, Sewerby Hall Museum, Sheffield Museum, Stockport Heritage Services, Sunderland Museum, Thirlestane Castle and the Walker Art Gallery.
