About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. In Wellington Square in Bloom, Alex Rennie captures the sweet, bright joy of a London spring afternoon. Rendered in oil on linen, the painting radiates with freshness and clarity. A pair of figures stroll toward a leafy square, where vibrant trees spill over soft façades and a gentle breeze seems to stir the air. There’s a sense of leisure and openness here—the everyday made quietly poetic.
Rennie’s impressionist technique allows light to breathe across the surface of the canvas. The softness of the architectural lines and blurred reflections of windows create a painterly push-and-pull between precision and suggestion. The shadows on the street, the glimmer of a taxi, and the glow of the lime-green canopy all contribute to a sense of real-time observation—captured, but not frozen.
The palette sings with minty greens, blush pinks, soft whites, and sky blues. Splashes of lavender and coral in the figures' clothing balance the composition and offer a moment of human connection amid the architectural calm. Rennie’s gift lies in his ability to translate the pulse of urban life into colour and light—and here, he invites the viewer to slow down and take notice of spring’s quiet arrival.
Artist Biography:
Born in London in 1977, Alex Rennie is a contemporary artist specializing in oil painting, working across a diverse range of styles from urban realism to geometric abstraction.
Over his 24-year career, Rennie has been dedicated to painting his home city, London, capturing its ever-changing skyline, dynamic streets, and reflective waterways. The city’s constant construction and regeneration serve as endless inspiration, offering new structures and shifting light effects that evolve from minute to minute and season to season.
Following in the footsteps of masters like Turner, Monet, and Canaletto, Rennie narrows his focus to specific streets and stretches of water, exploring their changing atmospheres and shifting dynamics. Whether sketching from dizzying viewing platforms, riverbeds at low tide, or along the Thames Path, his work reflects a deep obsession with capturing fleeting light at dawn and dusk.
Rennie studied Fine Art Painting (BA Hons) at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education (1997–2000) after completing a BTEC Foundation in Art and Design at Wimbledon School of Art (1996–1997). His work has been widely exhibited both internationally and domestically, including a solo exhibition on Cork Street with Waterhouse & Dodd.
His paintings have been selected for prestigious competitions, including:
John Moores Painting Prize
BP Portrait Prize Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery
Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize
ING Discerning Eye Exhibitions

“Over my 24 year career, I’ve been painting my home city of London. The capital has always been of great inspiration to me and I’ve been charting the ever-changing skyline over many paintings.
The constant construction and regeneration provides new edifices to reflect the myriad light effects which change from minute to minute and season to season.
In the footsteps of greats such as Turner, Monet and Canaletto, I have narrowed my focus on particular streets and stretches of water to truly explore the changing atmospheres and shifting dynamics.
I can be found up on the dizzying viewing platforms, down on the riverbed at low tide with the mudlarks or pacing the Thames path with a sketchbook in hand. Capturing the fleeting light at dawn and dusk is my endless obsession.”- Alex Rennie
