About the Item
Alexander Wyant, a key figure in nineteenth-century landscape painting, helped pioneer the Tonalist movement with a style influenced by George Inness. After establishing a studio in New York City in 1867, he exhibited at major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His atmospheric works, now in over seventy-five collections such as The White House, the Met, and the National Gallery of Art, bridged the Hudson River School and Impressionism.
