About the Item
Two mid-century impressionist watercolours, double sided on one paper, by Belgian artist André Pierard. On one side a rural scene with houses, signed and dated 51 bottom left and on the other side a canal scene, signed bottom left and dated 51 bottom right.
Warm and full of the colours of late summer a hamlet is pictured nestling in rolling hills of varied greens, ochre and blue. A beautiful composition, carefully placed marks and lines in grey and black trace the outlines of the hills and the picket fences dividing the fields. The sky is lit with the evening sun's rays creating a warm and cosy feeling as the hamlet goes to sleep.
The canal view by contrast has great energy due to lively brushstrokes and stronger lines. The midday light out of a blue sky picks out the ochre colours of the houses in the background, drawing the eye through the painting. A very well thought out composition, the tree in the centre softening the whole scene. Lovely use of light and shade especially the treatment of the water which flows slowly along reflecting the tree and elements of the bridge, ver charming.
André Pierard (Belgian artist) had a second home near Cotignac in Provence in the south of France and would spend his summers there during the 1970s setting up his easel and painting provencal inspired scenes. His work was quite extensive and eclectic as he produced landscapes, portraits and abstracts. Highly colourful and vibrant these original works make a great impact.
