About the Item

Title: Mid-20th Century Pastel of French Countryside Church with Bell Tower by Anne Marie Migette Perard (French 1902-1977) Medium: Pastel on unframed paper Size: 15.25 inches (height) x 20.5 inches (width) Condition: As is normal with unframed works on paper there are some minor old creases or paper edge curls/ tears - all of which should be covered over or smoothed out once framed; generally very good and sound. Provenance: as with all the works we have by this artist, it has come from the artists estate in France. Description: This serene pastel drawing by Anne Marie Migette Perard presents a peaceful view of a rural French church, set on a gentle rise above the surrounding landscape. With its tall spire, rounded chapel arches, and small flanking buildings—possibly a presbytery and nearby homes—the composition evokes the timeless presence of the church at the heart of the village. Rendered in soft, complementary tones of periwinkle, leafy green, and terracotta, the scene captures a calm summer’s day, where trees sway gently and the countryside stretches away into a violet-tinged sky. The lush grass and soft clouds add to the overall feeling of harmony and reflection, while the careful architectural details showcase Perard’s observant eye and her love of quiet, storied places. The architecture suggests a provincial Romanesque or early Gothic style typical of many 19th- and early 20th-century village churches in central or eastern France. Though the exact location is not identified, this piece captures the character of places like Burgundy, Auvergne, or the rural Dordogne. An evocative addition to a pastoral collection, perfect for admirers of ecclesiastical architecture, French countryside scenes, or nostalgic mid-century European art.
