About the Item

Title: Mid-20th Century Post-Impressionist Beach Scene with Women and Parasol by Anne Marie Migette Perard (French 1902-1977) Signed: Yes Medium: Pastel on unframed paper Size: 10.5 inches (height) x 16.5 inches (width) Condition: As is normal with unframed works on paper there are some minor old creases or paper edge curls/ tears - all of which should be covered over or smoothed out once framed; generally very good and sound. Provenance: as with all the works we have by this artist, it has come from the artists estate in France. Description: Vibrant and effortlessly stylish, this Mid-20th Century pastel by Anne Marie Migette Perard is a delightful snapshot of French summer leisure. Set against a row of beach huts with a bold parasol at centre stage, two women in vintage swimsuits relax by the shore—one absorbed in knitting, the other gazing into the shade beneath a wide-brimmed sunhat. The simplicity of line and vivid pops of colour lend the composition a breezy, elegant charm that echoes the fashion and freedom of mid-century beach culture. The oversized green and yellow parasol anchors the composition and creates a strong focal point, while the angular rooftops and crisp white huts evoke the neat geometry of a seaside resort. Perard’s style is loose yet highly observant, using pastel and coloured pencil to evoke texture and warmth with remarkable economy. The pinks and peaches of sun-kissed skin, the deep cobalt of the bathing suit, and the turquoise accents in the yarn suggest not just a place but a moment of quiet joy and intimacy. A subtly humorous detail—the woman knitting under the blazing sun—adds to the human charm of the scene. Whether viewed as a nostalgic look at summer past or a celebration of stylish simplicity, this work beautifully encapsulates Perard’s skill in elevating everyday moments into enduring art.
