About the Item

This panoramic landscape is a characteristic and excellent example of Dutch Romantic Painting of circa 1850. It depicts a Dutch landscape at sunset, with travelers on a horse and cart on a sandy road making their way home, as the evening approaches. A shepherd with his flock makes his way towards the windmills on the top of the hill on the right, from where no doubt a wonderful view over the valley beyond could be enjoyed. The overall atmosphere is peaceful, rural and quiet. The long cast shadows on the road in the foreground enhance the friendly atmosphere. The panoramic landscape such as seen here was invented by painters such as Andreas Schelfhout ( 1787 – 1870 ) and others of his generation, as a reaction to the way Dutch Painting had developed in the last quarter of the 18th and the first of the 19th century. They felt that the arts of their time were in a crisis; that it had become too ‘ Italian’ and that it had lost its function in society. Their aim was to give the arts their important position in society back and they argued that this could only happen as the Dutch character was to be restored. Thus, the new generation of landscape painters turned for inspiration to their famous 17th century predecessors, of which the works could now be admired in museums such as the Mauritshuis in The Hague and the Trippenhuis in Amsterdam. Schelfhout, himself a frequent visitor of the Mauritshuis, was particularly inspired by Jacob van Ruisdael, whose coastal and dune landscapes were of particular influence during the 1820’s. In line with their 17th century predecessors, the new generation of painters also set out on travels, in order to find the right painterly motifs for their works, with which they could recall the glory of the 17th century landscapes. Thus in 1836, Schelfhout and his friend Anthony de Meijier, set off on a journey to France and Germany. For de Meijier, the journey to Germany and especially the landscapes seen in Gelderland must have been of lasting inspiration, since he exhibited a number of landscapes under the label Gelderland in the Tentoonstellingen van Levende Meesters in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Perhaps therefore the rural village seen in the foreground here can probably be identified be as in the Utrechtse heuvelrug, with the valley of the Rhine seen beyond. However, de Meijier had no objective to paint a topographical correct landscape view. His aim here is to bring about a truly romantic sentiment in the mind of the beholder, by depicting a country and a situation belonging to the past. Hence the evening light and the shepherd climbing up to the windmills, for he as a man of nature is the first to enjoy the beauty of the distant vista.
