Description: Painted en plein air on the shingle beach of Aldeburgh, a much-loved seaside town on the Suffolk Coast and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this evocative 1994 watercolor captures the everyday maritime life that still defines the region. Tony Herbert sets two clinker-built fishing boats centre-stage against a soft, North Sea sky, their weather-bleached hulls resting on damp sand beside coils of rope, lobster pots and a lone red buoy. The distant silhouette of Aldeburgh’s fishermen’s huts and Martello tower anchors the composition in a recognisable East Anglian landscape, making the scene instantly appealing to collectors of British coastal art.
Herbert’s trademark economical brushwork and mastery of the wet-in-wet technique allow him to suggest intricate rigging and shifting cloud cover with just a few deft strokes, while his muted palette of indigo, sienna and Payne’s grey conveys the cool, briny atmosphere of an early-autumn morning on the North Sea.
