About the Item

Title: French Street Scene with Bar La Coquille Normandy Style Townhouse Watercolour By Tony Herbert (1927-2024) Medium: Watercolor on paper, unframed Size: 11.25 inches (height) x 15 inches (width) Condition: good, will some signs on wear consistent with aging Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work, Oxford, England Description: This charming watercolour by Tony Herbert (1927–2024) captures a quiet corner of a traditional French town, featuring stone-fronted houses and a local bar named La Coquille. The architecture suggests a Normandy influence, with its muted stonework, shuttered windows, and steeply pitched slate roofs – hallmarks of northern French townscapes. A cluster of flowering shrubs adds life and colour to the scene, while the moody grey sky overhead evokes the changeable weather of coastal France. The sign Bar La Coquille (‘The Shell Bar’) hints at the town’s likely proximity to the sea, or perhaps its place on a pilgrimage route, as “coquille” is also a reference to the scallop shell symbol of the Camino de Santiago. Whether intended or coincidental, Herbert’s sensitivity to place allows the viewer to feel immersed in a moment of everyday quietude, where timeless charm and soft atmosphere reign. Painted in 1985, as noted verso ("St. Val André '85"), the work is likely set in Pléneuf-Val-André – a seaside commune in Brittany known for its historic villas, seafront promenades, and relaxed coastal culture. Herbert’s brushwork remains loose but deliberate, using transparent layers to depict the textures of stone and shadow with confident restraint. This piece is a beautiful example of Tony Herbert’s mid-career travel work and would appeal to collectors of French scenes, architectural watercolours, or atmospheric European village studies.

Title: British Impressionist Watercolor of Village Street Leading to the Town Hall by Anthony Avery (British 1946-2023) Original watercolor on artists paper, unframed Dimensions: 11.25 x 15.25 inches (Height x Width) Condition: Good, with some minor signs of aging. Provenance: From a large collection of this artists work, held in England. Description: This watercolor painting captures the essence of a quaint village street, gently sloping towards a central square dominated by a stately town hall. The town hall, bathed in soft sunlight, stands proudly with its clock tower and arched windows, exuding a sense of timeless charm and importance in the community. The light facade contrasts beautifully against the darker tones of surrounding buildings, drawing the viewer’s eye upwards. The street itself is lined with buildings in muted colors, their facades showing signs of age and character, with textured brushstrokes suggesting a blend of plaster, stone, and weathered shutters. Shadows play across the road, adding depth and leading the viewer's gaze towards the focal point of the town hall. A few subtle figures...

Watercolour Street Scene of Josselin in Brittany with Church Tower
By Fanch Lel
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Title: Watercolour Street Scene of Josselin in Brittany with Church Tower by Fanche Lel Signed: Yes Size: 9.5 inches (height) x 12.5 inches (width) Watercolor painting on paper, unframed Condition: The painting is in good condition, with minor signs of handling at the edges. Provenance: All the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: This evocative watercolour by French artist Fanch Lel portrays a quiet street in the historic town of Josselin in Brittany, France. The artist inscribed the piece with “Josselia,” likely a personal or phonetic variation of the town’s name. Josselin is known for its medieval streets, slate-roofed buildings, and towering Gothic church spires—all elements reflected in this gentle and atmospheric composition. Painted in 1997, the scene is rendered in loose, flowing brushstrokes of slate blue, pale lilac, and ochre, capturing the stillness of a small Breton village. The central church steeple rises above the town, anchoring the otherwise softly abstracted architecture. A solitary figure walks along the cobbled street, adding a human element to the otherwise serene setting. This work is ideal for collectors of regional French townscapes, watercolour lovers...
