Description: This striking watercolour captures the much-loved Southwold Ferry Hut, perched on the edge of the sand dunes overlooking the River Blyth. The hut, with its bold “FERRY” sign painted in white block lettering, stands as a solitary dark form against a sky layered with shifting clouds and gentle golden light.
In the distance, moored boats line the far bank, their masts echoing the verticals of the buildings. The shoreline below is painted in expressive washes of ochre, mauve, and green — evoking the scrubby beauty of this tidal Suffolk landscape. The artist uses soft-edged skies and a cool horizon line to evoke the expansive light and openness typical of Southwold’s harbour environment.
Though unsigned on the front, this work is confirmed as an original Tony Herbert by the artist’s signature on the reverse side — which also features an additional, unfinished or secondary painting. This dual-sided composition makes the piece particularly collectible.
A beautiful example of East Anglian plein air painting, and a heartfelt record of one of Southwold’s most recognisable harbourside landmarks.
