Antonio Pietro Martino (1902 - 1988)
Antonio Martino was one of seven brothers and a sister, all of whom were artists. His father was a mason and stonecutter, and his mother had emigrated from Italy to Philadelphia. He began his studies at the Graphic Sketch Club in Philadelphia. Later he took weekend courses at the Spring Garden Institute and the La France Art Institute while being enrolled full time at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art.
In 1941, he and his brother Frank started the Martino Studios, a successful commercial art and design business. All of the Martino brothers participated in the business, which had a staff of twenty artists. Martino’s talents were recognized when he was in his late teens, and by his early twenties, his career had begun to flourish. In 1926, he was the youngest artist to win a medal at the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
Martino started out painting impressionist landscapes in and around New Hope area. Using a very thick impasto with a heavy impressionist style, his earliest work (1924-1929) was similar to that of Edward Redfield and Walter Schofield. In the latter 1920s and into the 1930x, Martino’s work began to evolve. It still remained impressionist in style, but the brush strokes broadened and the paint application became lighter. He often painted in Gloucester during the summer in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Towards the late 1930s and through the 1940s, his style began to move slightly towards the modernist and his subjects seem focused primarily on the Philadelphia neighborhood of Manayunk. These pictures have a desolate eerie feeling, similarly found in the work of Edward Hopper. Martino was also an accomplished watercolorist.
His work output was high and somewhat uneven. Martino’s earliest work is most commonly admired by collectors and critics, therefore commanding by far the highest values. In 1971, Martino moved to California where he continued to paint modernist coastal scenes and landscapes as well as still life subjects until the end of his life in 1988.
At the National Academy of Design, he won five prizes, including a Gold Medal. The National Academy made him an Associate in 1938 and an Academician in 1942. He also exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Club, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Corcoran Gallery Biennials, the Carnegie Institute, the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club and the Whitney Museum of American Art. During his distinguished career, he earned over eighty awards, had more than ten solo exhibitions and is permanently represented in more than twenty-five public collections.

Antonio Pietro Martino
Born in Philadelphia, Antonio P. Martino was the son of italian immigrants and one of eight siblings, all of whom were artists. His father was a mason and stonecutter, and his mother a buttonhole maker. At the age of 13, he attended classes with his brother Giovanni at the Graphic Sketch Club (now Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial) in South Philadelphia. Martino then studied with Albert Jean Adolphe at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art(now the University of the Arts) and took weekend courses at both the Spring Garden Institute and the La France Institute. By the age of 23, Martino had exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1941, he and his brothers founded Martino Commercial Art Studios, which provided a variety of fine art and promotional design services. All of the Martino brothers participated in the business, which had a staff of twenty artists. While living in the city, Martino and his brothers spent weekend mornings painting in Bucks County, creating landscapes of New Hope and the Delaware River that showed a strong impressionist influence. By 1971, he moved to California to paint seascapes and landscapes, residing there until his death in 1988. The winner of many national awards, Martino was elected as an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1938 and a National Academician in 1942, one of the highest distinctions awarded to American artists at the time.

Joseph Barrett (1936 – )
Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf.
A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet. This little studio, containing cans of old brushes and hundreds of used paint tubes...

Henry Bayley Snell (1858 - 1943)
Henry Bayley Snell was born in Richmond, England, on September 29, 1858 and immigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen. He studied at the Art Students League in New York while working for an etching and engraving company where he began a lifelong friendship with fellow artists, William Langson Lathrop. While in New York Snell met another artist, named Florence Francis, also of English descent, whom he would eventually marry in 1888. It is believed that they first came to Bucks County in 1898 to visit the Lathrops at Phillips Mill.
Snell was a beloved teacher at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women from 1899 to 1943, and often took his art classes abroad during the summer. He would frequently visit his native England, spending time at the art colony of St. Ives on the coast of Cornwall. Snell would summer in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where he also held painting classes. Almost all the women who exhibited with “The Philadelphia Ten” had studied with Snell either in Philadelphia or New England. Snell also taught on Saturdays at the Grand Central Galleries in New York City.
The Snells made many trips to New Hope before settling there permanently in 1925. They lived on the top floor of the Solebury National Bank Building where Henry also maintained a studio. This was located at the foot of the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge and many of Snell’s New Hope scenes were painted from this location. In 1943, Snell passed away in New Hope at the age of eighty-four.
Henry Snell earned an international reputation as an artist for his paintings of Cornwall...

Henry Wallace Methven "Impressionist Landscape" Water, Trees Summer Reflection
Located in Detroit, MI
Impressionist Landscape" is an exquisitely peaceful late summer scene along the banks of a quiet river. The dappling yellow and green leaves and the spots of blue sky give the perfect impressionistic feel to the scene. Impressionism was a style or movement in painting originating in France in the 1860s, characterized by a concern with depicting the visual impression of the moment, especially in terms of the shifting effect of light and color. Methven captured this impression perfectly. It is as fresh today as when it was painted in 1902 so much so that you can almost hear the rustle of the leaves and see the shifting light. The gold gilt frame is original to the piece. Without the frame the piece measures 20 h x 16 w. It is signed by the artist.
Methven was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1930's he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he painted with other area Chicago artists and showed at The Art Institute of Chicago. He spent his summers in Benton Harbor, Michigan, along Lake Michigan. He is known for his landscapes and water scenes. Michigan has numerous rivers, creeks and small lakes and Methven would have had a wealth of scenes to draw upon for his numerous oil paintings.
He studied under Henry Fenton Spread who taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later founded Spread's Art Academy. In 1902, this academy became the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Spread was named the first president of the Chicago Society of Artists in 1889. Known primarily as a portraitist, Spread also painted landscape and genre scenes. Although a skilled artist, he did not exhibit widely; his primary legacy being fostering a love of art in Chicago. Fellow artist (and former student of Spread), Ralph Clarkson, the noted Chicago society portrait painter, stated that Spread' s "fine and advice formed the careers of the men who were not only to achieve prominence as artists, but to occupy leading places as art teachers". Harry Wallace Methven...
