About the Item

Title: White Rocks, Cape of Creus Artist: Antonio Sala Herrero (Barcelona, 1926 – 2012) Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 65 x 81 cm (25.6 x 31.9 in) Framed: No Date: 1976 Inscriptions: On the reverse: “A SALA HERRERO / BARCELONA. 76 / ROCAS BLANCAS / CABO DE CREUS” Provenance: Sala Herrero, Barcelona Condition: Very good. Vibrant colors and well-preserved impasto. Work Description White Rocks, Cape of Creus is a vibrant interpretation of the rugged and radiant landscape at the easternmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula. With loose, impasto brushwork, Antonio Sala Herrero captures the sculptural strength of the Cape of Creus rock formations bathed in Mediterranean light. The composition is built through successive layers of color, highlighting ochres, greens, and lilacs in a pictorial choreography that balances topographic accuracy with poetic exaltation. The painting belongs to the tradition of Catalan Mediterranean landscape, clearly aiming to celebrate nature through a vibrant palette and consolidated technical mastery. The direct, dense brushstroke loaded with pigment reflects the artist’s full artistic maturity during the 1970s. About the Artist: Antonio Sala Herrero Antonio Sala Herrero (Barcelona, 1926 – 2012) was a self-taught painter specializing in landscapes and urban scenes of Catalonia. Passionate about art from an early age, he held his first solo exhibition in 1967 at the Municipal Hall of Figueres. His works were regularly exhibited in Catalan galleries such as La Pinacoteca in Barcelona, Galerías Nonell in Castellón, and Galería Rovira in Sabadell. Sala Herrero was known for capturing the luminous atmosphere of the Mediterranean. He used expressive brushstrokes and vivid colors to depict intense landscapes from places like Cadaqués, Palamós, and Llafranc. He also painted still lifes and urban themes. Among the awards he received are the Villa de Palamós Prize in 1969 and a distinction from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Artists with a Similar Style Rafael Durancamps: For his chromatic structuring and lyrical treatment of the Catalan landscape. Joaquim Mir: In his exaltation of nature through pure color and thick paint. Josep Amat: For his lively brushwork and colorful palette applied to the Catalan coastline. Francesc Gimeno: In the expressive use of impasto and vigorous depiction of terrain.

"Dalmatian Coast (Near Dubrovnik)" Oil Painting
By Ulrich Gleiter
Located in Denver, CO
Ulrich Gleiter's (EUR based) "Dalmatian Coast (Near Dubrovnik)" is an oil painting that depicts a blue coast lined with green textural beaches. Bio/Artist Statement: German-born artist Ulrich Gleiter (b. 1977) is noted for his landscapes. His style is sometimes reminiscent of German expressionism and the Russian impressionists. He first studied at the Dresden Academy of Arts and later at the Repin Academy in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His work has been recognized with awards in the USA and in Russia and been featured in books and magazines. "Ulrich Gleiter is a citizen of the world. Born in Saarbrücken, Germany, he pursued his undergraduate studies at Dresden’s Academy of Fine Arts, where he learned to paint with the bold, colorful strokes handed down from the early 20th-century German expressionists. Students there prioritized their individuality — no one but you could have made this picture, they were told. Gleiter then absorbed a different view of artistry during his exchange year at Moscow’s Surikov Institute, followed by six more years at the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg. Today Gleiter divides time between Germany, Russia, and the United States, where he has become much admired among plein-airists in such scenic places as Colorado, California, and Wyoming. In our era of diplomatic tensions, when Crimea and Russia appear regularly in the headlines, Gleiter feels a renewed appreciation for nature’s timelessness — for its inspiring capacity to rise above the ins-and-outs of man-made problems. Today, he says, “I often think about the history of an area where I am painting, about how many troubles and beautiful things may have happened there. Most importantly, I am humbled to observe how natural forces never stop moving.” Gleiter turns his searching eye not only to wilderness, but also to the banalities of urban life — to parked cars, the glinting sprawl of an automobile dealer’s lot, retail stores, and even cargo ships. There, too — as in his portraits, nudes, and still lifes — he manages to find abstracted beauty and emotional significance in the interactions of light, color, and air."
