About the Item

This has been recently added to the catalogue raisonee by an Expert of the Guillomain Foundation in Paris.
Certificate of Authenticity available. Signed lower right. Guillaumin painted many canvases of this same location, under different conditions and seasons, but also gradually evolving his artistic style. While Armand Guillaumin is primarily known as an Impressionist painter, particularly for his landscapes, his later work, particularly from the 1890s, showed a shift towards bolder, less naturalistic color choices that prefigured the Fauvist movement. Due to these late canvases, Guillaumin is considered to be a forerunner of Fauvism, underscoring his importance in the history of French painting. This canvas is of pivotal importance in his oeuvre, as it compares strikingly with previous, more naturalistic renditions of the same location, making evident his dramatic stylistic transition over the course of his career.
