About the Item
Signed and dated lower right: “Trachtman 6-6-73”. From the estate of the artist.
Though much of his art was political in nature, Arnold Trachtman also continually produced scenes of his immediate world: the bridges, buildings, parks, and squares of Metro Boston. His cityscapes brim with life, detailing both the notable architecture and colorful characters inhabiting familiar locales, capturing a more personal view of the “town” he called home.

View AllNewbury Street, Boston [Louis Boston / Bonwit Teller Building]
Located in Boston, MA
This watercolor by Charles Demetropoulos depicts a classical French Academic-style building which was designed in 1862 by architect William G. Preston as the new home of the Boston Society for Natural History, which had been founded in 1830. In the 1860’s, many of Boston’s cultural institutions relocated here to the Back Bay, the elegant residential district being built on the tidal marshes behind the city. When the museum moved here in 1863, the new building dominated the western edge of the landfill. The classical design reflected its role as a “temple of learning.” The building was later renovated into a women’s retail store known as Bonwit Teller and later became home to Louis Boston...

Street in Naples
By Sean Flood
Located in Boston, MA
Sean Flood (American, b.1982), Street in Naples, 2012. Signed lower right: "Sean Flood". Painting depicts a cityscape of a street in Naples, Italy. Painting dimensions: 46 x 32 inches. Framed dimensions: 48 3/4 x 34 1/2 inches.
Born and raised on the South Shore of Massachusetts, Sean Flood has always been drawing. The process of construction has also surrounded him for much of his life. His father was a builder, and Flood himself worked construction during his time at the Art Institute of Boston. Flood’s art is a reflection of these factors: when he approaches a work, he is drawing with paint, constructing his scenes from the ground up, much like how a building is raised. His subject matter, not surprisingly, pulls from his fascination and familiarity with the architecture of cities. Flood presents his viewers with the modern era’s landscape: the urban jungle created by man’s building efforts.
The kinetic energy felt in Flood’s paintings has its root’s in the artist’s background. Flood spent many years as a street artist working in graffiti, and still approaches his paintings with the same dynamism used in covering a blank wall. After brief forays in architecture and illustration, Flood found a home in fine art under the tutelage of George Nick, realizing that painting could appreciate both a frenzied energy and an eye for the construction process. Flood uses both to create works that reflect the hectic feel of urban life, yet also project the familiarity and comfort a city brings to its denizens.
Flood’s work has been exhibited at many venues including the deCordova Museum, Duxbury Art...
