About the Item

Arthur R. Safford (American, 1900 - 1992) Signed: Arthur R. Safford (Lower, Right) " After the Storm ", circa 1960s Oil on Canvas 24" x 30" Housed in a 2 1/2" Pine Frame with a 3/4" Liner and toned fillet Overall Size: 30 1/2" x 36 1/2" In very good condition. Ready to be hung and enjoyed. A painter of seascapes, portraits, and figures, Safford's style is best described as romantic realism. Arthur Safford was born in Boston in 1900, graduated from the Alandale School of Art in Boston and was a student of Ernst L. Major, while attending the Massachusetts School of Art. He received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Calvin Coolidge College in 1944, and a Masters in Philosophy of Art in 1948. He was a member of the faculty at Boston College for eight years and taught artists and teachers alike. For many years he had a studio and gallery in Boston and then in Rocky Neck since 1958, when he moved to Cape Ann. Mr. Safford was a member and past president of the North Shore Art Association; member of the American Artist Professional League. He died on September 28, 1992 and rests in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, East Gloucester.
