A painter of seascapes, portraits, and figures, Safford's style is best described as romantic realism. The rendition of a subject in its precise place, light and moment is interpreted through the artist's knowledge and appreciation for its uniqueness Some of his paintings show a whimsical, fantastic interpretation of a scene but always true to the last detail.
Arthur Safford was born in Boston in 1900, graduated from the Alandale School of Art in Boston and was a student of Ernst L. Major, while attending the Massachusetts School of Art. He received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Calvin Coolidge College in 1944, and a Masters in Philosophy of Art in 1948. He was a member of the faculty at Boston College for eight years and taught artists and teachers alike.
For many years he had a studio and gallery in Boston and then in Rocky Neck since 1958, when he moved to Cape Ann.
