I due dipinti a olio su tela sono opera del pittore Baren Gael, nato ad Haarlem nel 1630. Attivo in un primo momento alla bottega del padre, Gael risulta già registrato presso la corporazione di pittori locale nel 1642, sebbene non si conosca la prima parte del suo corpus operistico. Fu molto probabilmente allievo di Philips Wouwerman (1619–1668), a sua volta debitore di un praticantato presso Frans Hals (1582-1666) e Pieter Verbeck (1610–1654). Dalla pittura del Wouwerman si affrancò introno agli anni Sessanta del secolo, come documentato da A. Houbraken (De Groote Schouburgh der Nederlantse Konstschilders… vol. 3, 1753). Parte dell’ispirazione relativa al genere macchiettistico e al formalismo rappresentativo, evidenziabile anche nei presenti dipinti, provenne a Gael sicuramente dai colleghi di Haarlem; allontanatosi da questa città tra il 1661 e il 1673, quando raggiunse Amsterdam, l’artista continuò la propria produzione pullulante di scene contadine alla maniera di Adriaen e Isaac van Ostade. In continuità con l’intera produzione fiamminga cinquecentesca, Gael ripropone anche nella presente coppia il dualismo tipico delle scene di genere olandesi, introducenti da un lato alla serenità del dato naturale, dall’altro alla vivacità tumultuosa della vita, alle volte affiancata da scene di carattere religioso, amoroso o piccole scene di battaglia. L’artista smise di datare le proprie opere nel 1681, anche se è errata la convinzione storiografica di un tempo, che lo voleva inattivo al cavalletto tra gli anni Ottanta e Novanta del XVII secolo.
Di Gael si possono oggi ammirare diversi dipinti custoditi in istituzioni museali come il Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen di Rotterdam, il Birmingham Museums Trust e il Museo Luigi Mallè di Dronero. La concomitante produzione disegnativa dell’artista, spesso superiore alla mera finalità di studio, rientra invece a pieno vigore nella tradizione del bozzettismo olandese, come dimostrato dalla Scena con cavaliere oggi presso il British Museum londinese.
