About the Item

Barent Gael (1630/1635 - 1698) Pair of landscapes with genre scenes (2) Oil on canvas, 33 x 40.5 cm Framed, 48 x 54.5 cm The work is not signed The two oil on canvas paintings are the work of painter Baren Gael, born in Haarlem in 1630. Active at first in his father's workshop, Gael is reported to be registered with the local guild of painters as early as 1642, although the first part of his operatic corpus is unknown. He was most likely a pupil of Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668), who in turn owed apprenticeships to Frans Hals (1582-1666) and Pieter Verbeck (1610-1654). From Wouwerman's painting he freed himself around the 1760s, as documented by A. Houbraken (De Groote Schouburgh der Nederlantse Konstschilders... vol. 3, 1753). Some of the inspiration relating to the macchietistic genre and representational formalism, also evident in the present paintings, surely came to Gael from colleagues in Haarlem; having moved away from this city between 1661 and 1673, when he reached Amsterdam, the artist continued his own production teeming with peasant scenes in the manner of Adriaen and Isaac van Ostade. In continuity with the entire sixteenth-century Flemish production, Gael also re-proposes in the present pair the dualism typical of Dutch genre scenes, introducing on the one hand the serenity of the natural datum and on the other the tumultuous vivacity of life, sometimes flanked by religious, love or small battle scenes. The artist stopped dating his works in 1681, although the former historiographical belief that he was inactive at the easel between the 1680s and 1690s is incorrect. Several paintings by Gael can be seen today that are housed in museum institutions such as the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Birmingham Museums Trust, and the Luigi Mallè Museum in Dronero. Instead, the artist's concomitant drawing production, which often exceeded the mere purpose of study, falls squarely within the tradition of Dutch sketching, as evidenced by the Scene with Knight now in the British Museum in London.
