ARTISTIC APPROACH:
When the day fades, the truth appears in the light of the twilight. The whole being, invaded by the padded silence of the advancing night, sees his humanity bend under the awakening of his senses. He becomes again more instinctive, more animal, more true in the beauty of his solitude ... and the return to nature that the twilight imposes, then sends him back an exact image of himself. It is this transformation that Ben Pastre seizes, this lapse of time when the dog merges with the wolf, where tranquility struggles with worry. Darkness, like a wave, inevitably spreads over his canvas, gently erasing shapes and colors to make room for the immensity of the essential and the highlighting of those vital details that in broad daylight, the eye does not perceive.
Ben Pastre's painting thus travels through the thickness of the canvas. It first emerges from the depths through large flat spots of colors. With the impatience of the diver in a hurry to catch his breath, the artist creates them in acrylic or with watercolor inks, thus limiting the drying time to progress more quickly to the surface. These flatterings also nourish her canvas with nuances that she will subtly enhance, this time in oil. She uses, for this purpose, a palette essentially composed of blacks and whites which, associated with ultramarine, yellow, vermilion, umber and sienna, natural or burnt, flourish in a beautiful variation. gray.
The smoothness of the oil allows it to glide delicately towards the end of its work. She also brings a softness to her paintings that alleviates apprehension of the surrounding darkness, to the point of
substituting a feeling of appeasement. The final addition of silver or golden peppers, symbolizing the reassuring presence of artificial lights, also reinforces this impression.
The atmosphere that emanates from Ben Pastre's paintings encourages interior monologue. Caught up in the apparent darkness, the viewer finds himself immersed in a refined world dominated by silence. He is alone, but this solitude is benevolent and already augurs well for a new day. His contemplation is a breath, a pause during which he finds himself, or forgets himself, before setting off again. As much as the subject itself, the pictorial treatment has a lot to do with this impression, with its shades that darken, with its landmarks also, thanks to which the night remains always familiar.
This world is that of the artist and his paintings are so many self-portraits in which his solitary, silent character shines through, and which perceives beauty even in its obscurity.

By Louis Aston Knight
Located in Atlanta, GA
Louis Aston Knight, was the son of the American expatriate artist, Daniel Ridgway Knight. Born in Paris in 1873, Louis, unlike his father, had the privilege to be brought up in a home where he was surrounded by art and music. Raised and educated in Europe, Louis attended the Chigwell School in England for his Liberal Arts Education and began his artistic training, under the guidance of his father. Later he studied formally with the great French Romantic painters, Robert-Fleury and Jules Lefebvre.
In 1894 Aston Knight debuted at the Paris Salon, starting a highly acclaimed career. Among his many awards, he won a Bronze medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, an honorable mention at the Paris Salon in 1901, a gold medal in Lyon in 1903, a gold medal in Geneva and in Nantes in 1904 and Gold medals at the Paris Salon in both 1905 and 1906, earning him the title Hors concours as the first American to win two gold medals at the Salon in two consecutive years. Knight, was also made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1924 becoming an Officer in 1928 and eventually a Commander in 1934.
Louis Aston Knight is most famous for his French landscapes executed in and around his home in Beaumont-le-Roger. Aston looked up to Claude Monet, and visited him from time to time at his home in Giverny. He was particularly impressed with Monet's gardens, and strove to cultivate a garden as beautiful as the master's. Knight also awarded prizes each year to the neighboring peasants who kept the nicest gardens. This ensured him of good models for his cottage landscape paintings.
Gradually Aston Knight became well known in the New York art scene and traveled to the United States many times – painting scenes in New York, Florida and California. In 1911, Knoedler and Co. held an exhibition of his landscapes of the U.S.A. and France. His exhibition at the Levy Gallery in New York, in 1931 attracted much attention. In fact, "Art News" critiqued the show (26 December issue) and described his fame and plein-air approach:
A group of new landscapes by Aston Knight, the popular painter of the Normandy Riverscape, is the Holiday attraction at the Levy Gallery. Mr. Knight sticks closely to his well established formula, doubtless due to the tremendous acclaim acquired in his earlier years when Hopkinson Smith...

Wendy Reeves garnered acclaim for her Scottish Highland and Lakeland paintings. Born in 1944 in Ewell, Surrey, she took to her father Gordon’s craft, deciding early on that she would be a painter. Prior to her famous paintings of the British Isles, artist Wendy Reeves painted scenes from a trip she made to Spain when she was 21. It was during this time that her dream of following in her father’s footsteps became a reality, and when she returned to England she cemented her name as an artist.
Wendy Reeves' paintings showcase her talent with natural landscapes and the wildlife that inhabits them. Her work often features ochre and pink lights...
