Benjamin Williams Leader
19th century Fall English landscape with figures on a path in the highlands

circa 1880

About the Item

Wonderful Autumn/Fall landscape by one of Englands finest landscape painters. Born as Benjamin Williams, the artist added the surname Leader (his Father’s middle name) to distinguish himself from the Williams family of painters of which he was not a member. Upon abandoning a profession in engineering for art, he became a pupil at the Royal Academy in 1853. The following year he showed his first picture there and continued to exhibit prolifically up until 1923.Leader achieved notable success with his painting “February Fill Dyke”, exhibited in 1881. It remains one of the most famous Victorian paintings and is a tribute to Leader’s artistic talents. The Royal Academy elected him an Associate in 1883, and an Academician in 1898. He also exhibited abroad winning the gold medal and the Legion of Honour in Paris in 1889.Examples of Leader’s work can be seen in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and Sheffield Art Galleries, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery. This example is framed in a fine vintage English swept frame.

Antique 19th century English Victorian Waterfall scene landscape
By John Brandon Smith
Located in Woodbury, CT
John Brandon Smith, John Brandon Smith is an English landscape artist of some renown. He concentrated on the waterways of England, Scotland and Wales. He was particularly interested in the effects of cascading water. This led to his being given the moniker 'Waterfall Smith'. He was fascinated by the spectacle of rivers in spate. Many of his paintings concentrated on the rivers Conway, Llugwy and Lledr in North Wales but he also painted the rivers of England and Scotland. Some of his more celebrated works show The Swallow Falls and Aysgarth Falls in North Yorkshire. He used many shades of green and blue on his small, jewel-like canvases. He would occasionally introduce the figure of a fisherman to provide perspective. His themes are characteristic of the Renaissance of the European Romantic Movement. He exhibited twenty-two works at The Royal Academy between 1860 and 1874. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street. This is a very rare large example of the painters work. It is framed in an Antique English frame

Antique Scottish Highland Loch landscape, with sunlit streaming onto the water
By Francis E. Jamieson
Located in Woodbury, CT
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolor of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolors have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils. Jamieson is known to have traveled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'. - Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at the usual sites. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Charles Maurice, Graham Williams...
