This is one of his better paintings done on stretched canvas I feel. Wonderful composition and technique.
Bernard Corey (1914-2000), known for his delicate New England landscapes, is considered one of the premier New England plein air artists of the twentieth century. He gained national recognition over the last 30 years for his beautifully rendered landscape paintings and is highly collected and coveted by collectors and artists alike. His paintings are in high demand and sell well at auction.
He was born on September 3, 1914, in Grafton, Massachusetts, and he lived his life in the house that his grandfather built in South Grafton. In the early 1960s, he made the decision to dedicate his life to being an artist. He moved to Rockport for a short time to hone his skills and quickly established himself as a professional painter. Corey always drew his inspiration from nature. He felt that it was necessary to paint directly from the source as opposed to working in the studio or from photographs, and painted a variety of subject matter, in oils and watercolors, on location throughout New England. He was a member of The Allied Artists Society, The Salmagundi Club of New York City, The Guild of Boston Artists, The Hudson Valley (NY) Art Association, The North Shore Art Association, The Academic Artists Society, The American Artists Professional League, The American Watercolor Society, and The Rockport Art Association.
His awards include: The Lazare Barth Award, North Shore AA (1964; Academic Artist Association First Place for watercolor (1964), Helen Gould Kennedy Award (1973), Morton Donald Cotch Award (1976), Samuel Armour Award (1981), N.E. Heritage Award (1988), Rockport Art Association (many awards including) Peg Leg Award (1971), Eliot Award (1972), Hibbard and the Geddes Awards (1974, 1978), Colburn Award (1977), Everett Award (1979), Salmagundi Club, NYC (many awards including) L.B. Seley Award (1971, 1976), Thumb Box Show (1974, 1977), Winsor & Newton Award (1986, 1987)); Hudson Valley Art Association, C.H. Davis Award (1981), Providence Watercolor Club, lst Prize (1972); Lester House, New York City, Guy Award (1977), Gold Medal (1978), Allied Artists of America, Gold Medal of Honor (1973); Academic Artists Assoc., Gold Medal (1975) and many more.

SELLERS STATEMENT
I have been in the art business as an artist and collector since the early 80's. I'm currently offering select paintings from my collection like this one. In order to collect new paintings, I must sell off some of my current collection.
For art that I have painted, it is derived in a variety of ways. I'm a responder. I respond to light, color, design, etc. and I love painting both outdoors on location and in the studio under a controlled environment. I try to convey an idea, mood or just simply a beautiful setting. I'm inspired by a wide variety of subject matter and styles of painting and do not adhere to just one way.
My paintings have won numerous awards over the years and have been collected both nationally and internationally. They can be found in three museum collections, the White House Collection and many private collections.

"Théâtre de 'Atelier" 20th Century Impressionist Parisian Scene Oil on Canvas
Located in New York, NY
A charming Parisian scene oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Johanne Schiefer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see figures walking in front of the Théâtre de l'Atelier with an abundance of color and life. The magic is being felt with all the magnificent details, as Schiefer captures the architecture of Paris so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. The piece is signed by the artist lower right and titled lower left and it comes housed in a gold tone French style carved wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
Art measures 14 x 18 inches
Frame measures 18 x 22.5 inches
Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes, still life’s and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at the age of 19 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in art at the Beaux Arts, and later at the Villa Medici in Rome. He traveled to paint across Europe, primarily France and Italy and also Latin America.
When he married, he settled down in Nice France, and during the late thirties, he traveled and painted the coastline of the South of France, as well as Venice and the Adriatic. He remained in France until 1942, when he moved to New York with his family after the birth of their daughter, future actress Joanna Miles. Already an artist of stature when he arrived in New York, he settled with his family on Long Island, and for the next 30 years, Schiefer kept on painting and built a solid reputation as an important American artist. The Schiefers also had a son, Johannes Jr. After the war, Schiefer maintained a Paris studio and became a resident of Los Angeles for a time in the 1950s.
For the next 30 years Schiefer kept on painting and during his career had numerous one man shows, having exhibitions at: Gallery Zak in Paris; Kunsthaus in Hamburg; Kunsthalle in Munich; Stiebel Galleries in Paris; O'Connor Gallery in Ontario; Museum of Modern Art, Wildenstein & Co, Carol Carstairs Gallery and Schoeneman Galleries in New York City; Esther Robles Gallery, County Museum and Vigoveno Galleries in Los Angeles; and the San Francisco Museum.
Like Picasso, Schiefer never permitted himself to be “type-cast” in a single monotonous style. If there is anything that typifies his work, it is his versatility, his deft handling of subdued tones to create a unique brilliance of light and color that stamps every painting with his own individuality. In February 1964, Ethel Kennedy...
