About the Item
An idyllic scene of figures punting on an East Anglian river. Dating to 1919, the image has an added poignancy as it is in sharp contrast to the tragedies of the First World War which had only ceased a year before this was painted.

Landscape painter in oil, born in Bradford, Yorkshire, studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. Travelled extensively in Europe. Exhibited frequently at RA, also RBA, Goupil Gallery, ROI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and widely elsewhere in the provinces. His pictures were reproduced by the Medici Society and Frost & Reed. Priestman is noted for his painterly, rather breezy landscapes. In 1914 Priestman purchased ‘Windy Haugh’ at Walberswick, Suffolk, a house designed by Humphrey Jennings and added a studio in the garden where he tutored pupils, including Edward Seago. After a brief period away at Wharfedale in 1919, he returned to Walberswick where he remained until 1927.
Priestman’s pictures are in many provincial galleries in Britain, including Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester, as well as a large number of overseas holdings. Won a series of international medals and was elected RA, 1923. Lived in Crowborough, Sussex.

Bertram Priestman
Bertram Priestman was born into a wealthy Bradford manufacturing family. In his youth, he was much influenced by his older half brother Arnold Priestman, who had been a pupil of Henry La Thangue. After a tour of Italy in 1886, Priestman attended Bradford Technical College, followed in 1888 by the Slade School of Art in London. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1889 and the New English Art Club from 1894. In his paintings of landscapes and coastal scenes, Priestman combined the English landscape tradition with techniques influenced by the French Impressionists such as vigorous handling of paint and the use of a bright luminous palette.

Frederick George Cotman was born in Ipswich on 14 August 1850. His uncle, John Sell Cotman, was one of the cornerstones of the Norwich school and a very influential watercolourist. Frederick's first tuition came from William Griffiths, headmaster of Ipswich School of Art. In 1868 he enlisted at the Royal Academy Schools and his proficiency as a draughtsman and painter in oils and watercolours was rewarded with four silver and a gold medal for The Death of Eucles now at the Ipswich Town Hall. His teachers in London were Frederick Leighton (1830-1896) and Henry Tanworth Wells (1828-1903). Cotman became established as a London society portrait painter, for which he could command a fee of 300 guineas and also produced homely genre scenes.
