About the Item

After, Camille Pissarro 1830-1903, was a French Impressionist artist. He left France to escape the Prussian invasion and the Civil uprising thereafter. Pissarro and his family moved to England and to the South of London suburbs of Norwood, he painted suburban landscapes throughout the area which included Sydenham and Crystal Palace. In 1851 Joseph Paxton designed and built the iron and glass building known as the Crystal Palace which was originally built in Hyde Park, London, for the World Exhibition of 1851, and it was later moved South to Sydenham. The surrounding area has been known ever since as Crystal Palace, the surrounding land has been developed into large houses which originally accommodated the wealthy businessmen from London and is now a shadow of it's former self, and is incorporated within the London Borough. This picture is a hand painted oil on canvas, and has been conserved it is a direct copy of the original which we understand is held in the Chicago Art Institute.
