About the Item

Circle of Carlo Labruzzi A view of Lake Nemi Oil on canvas Canvas Size 26 3/8 x 40 1/2 in Framed Size 35 x 49 in Carlo Labruzzi was an Italian painter, draftsman, and engraver, best known for his evocative landscapes and works inspired by Italy’s classical heritage. Born in Rome in 1748, Labruzzi developed an early passion for art and became associated with the Neoclassical movement, which celebrated the grandeur of ancient Rome and the beauty of its ruins. Labruzzi's artistic career was deeply tied to his skill in capturing the picturesque countryside of Italy, especially scenes along the famed Via Appia, an ancient Roman road. His ability to blend accurate architectural depictions with lush, atmospheric landscapes made him a favorite among the European elite, particularly British tourists embarking on the Grand Tour. In 1789, Labruzzi was commissioned by the English antiquarian Sir Richard Colt Hoare to create a series of drawings documenting the Via Appia. This ambitious project aimed to visually preserve the route and its historic landmarks. However, Labruzzi’s journey was cut short due to ill health, and the project remained incomplete. Despite this, the sketches and paintings he produced are considered among his finest works, showcasing his talent for combining historical accuracy with artistic beauty. Labruzzi was also an accomplished engraver, contributing to the dissemination of classical and romanticized views of Italy to a broader European audience. His works often feature a harmonious interplay of ruins, pastoral settings, and human figures, reflecting the 18th-century fascination with antiquity and the sublime. Carlo Labruzzi passed away in Perugia in 1817. Today, his works are appreciated for their historical significance and their role in shaping the romanticized view of Italy that captivated the imagination of travelers and artists of his era. His legacy endures in the drawings and engravings housed in collections such as the British Museum in London.
