About the Item
Bridge Over Ballona - Sunset in the marina turns the
Ballona Creek salmon pink, reflecting the soft hues of the evening sky as
the sun dips into the Pacific Ocean. The rose-colored sky is the backdrop
for the silhouetted bridge which stands in stark relief. The houses in the
community beyond barely peek over the bridge.
Artist Carole Garland abstracts this nighttime noir bridge and the moving
waters of the creek below. She paints in a traditional style, then gives
way to a playful treatment of the water and the reflections from the
bridge. An impasto painting technique is employed to emphasize the effects
of the setting sun on the sky and the water. The thick layers of paint -
the strokes are visible - create a three dimensional effect.
The 24'x48" oil painting on canvas is wired for ease of hanging and
handling.
Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern
California, including several juried California Art Club shows. Garland had
several individual shows at TAG Gallery, Bergamot Station, Santa Monica and
recently at West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; Santa Paula Art Museum;
Channel Islands Studio Gallery; Gallery of Hermosa, Hermosa Beach; deFrenS
Gallery, Westlake Village; Kathryne Designs,
Montecito, to name a few.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.
