About the Item
The beautiful Santa Monica Coastline is cloaked in a
foggy mist until the Marine Layer slowly lifts by late morning. Artist
Carole Garland captures the moment from the Palisades bluffs which overlook
the Pacific Coast Highway. The Santa Monica Beach and the Pacific Ocean are
revealed and come into focus. By late morning the sun will come out and all
will be bright again. Southern Californians call it "May Gray" or "June
Gloom", an annual part of the seasonal calendar.
Artist Carole Garland finds much to play with in this abstracted
atmospheric land and seascape. The Santa Monica Pier is all but obscured in
the background. Garland employs a scumbling technique (using a dry brush
with opaque paint) to great effect throughout this small work. The
foreground shrubbery is minimized while the Santa Monica "skyscrapers" are
lit up. Colors are muted and blended to embrace the moment.
Carole Garland graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and studied
at the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of the Americas in
Mexico City. She has taken numerous workshops with such plein air
painters as Frank Serrano, Linda Jacobson, Calvin Liang and Jeff Horn. She
most recently studied with David Gallup, fine artist and former
vice-president of the California Art Club.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
