About the Item
Solstice Canyon - A rocky creek streams through the woods of Solstice Canyon in Malibu. The quiet shaded glen offers solace to those lucky enough to discover the leaf-strewn path that follows the stream. Fallen
logs and low brambles often block the way. Sunlight filters through the trees; blue sky reflections accent
the water in this Impressionistic landscape in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Carole Garland employs Impressionist techniques to capture the fleeting nature of the moment. Using quick visible brush strokes in a direct and spontaneous style, she seeks the essence, rather than the detail of the subject. In this work, Garland paints on a raw umber ground (underpainting) and it functions as a middle tone in this painting.
This 24"x18" Oil on Wood Panel is wired for ease of hanging and its natural wood sides may serve as a frame.
Fine Artist Carole Garland is in art collections throughout the US and has shown in numerous Southern California venues. Workshops with fine artists David Gallup, former Vice-President of the California Art Club; Frank Serrano, Jeff Horn, Calvin Liang and Linda Jacobson helped ground Garland in classical academic painting at the same time encouraging exploration and experimentation.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.
