About the Item
A wonderful and idyllic, mid 19th Century summery village scene, where a pretty young girl stands, knitting (perhaps she is secretly waiting for someone?), village women eat and work together, as a young swineherd walks past with his animals. According to an inscription on the stretcher, the scene takes place on Oleron Island, an island off the French Atlantic coast on the Bay of Biscay.
Chaplin would later become known as a painter of women - Manet, who admired him, observed that Chaplin ‘knew the smile of a woman’ - but his early work is Realist in style.
Realism was an artistic movement that emerged in France in the 1840s, around the 1848 Revolution. The Realists rejected Romanticism, which had dominated French literature and art since the early 19th century. They sought to portray real and typical contemporary people and situations with truth and accuracy. Realism is widely regarded as the beginning of the modern art movement due to the push to incorporate modern life and art together.
Yet whilst being a Realist, Chaplin's love for the world and its beauty always shines through in warm colours and empathy with his subject matter.
As a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de sculpture, Charles Chaplin exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon, the official exhibition venue of members' work. He began exhibiting his paintings at the French Artists' Salon in 1845 and was represented there habitually each year. These exhibitions made him one of France's most famous portrait artists. Commencing in 1847, his work was exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London.
During his lifetime, he received acclaim for his work by the award of several medals: a third class medal in 1851; a second class medal the following year; and an honourable mention in 1865. He was made a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, and elevated to the rank of Officer in 1881. Works by Charles Chaplin are housed in the French museums of Bordeaux, Bayonne, Bourges, Mulhouse, Paris, Reims, Rouen and Saintes. Internationally, his works can be found in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Harvard Art Museums in Massachusetts and the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indiana. There are also several paintings by Chaplin in the Bowes Museum in the UK.

Charles Joshua Chaplin
Charles Joshua Chaplin’s celebrated portraits of young women are reminiscent of the 18th-century romanticism of Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88) and François Boucher (1703–70) but his subjects are nevertheless recognizable as more modern Belle Epoque women. The critical and commercial success of Chaplin’s beautifully lit portraits of sensual young women captured en déshabillé established him as one of the foremost French academic painters of the period. By the late 50s, Chaplin was being inundated with commissions from the French aristocracy requesting portraits of their wives and daughters. Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III, was also a big fan and appointed him an artist of the court. The Empress and her husband’s enthusiastic support came in handy when, in 1859, his portrait Aurora was banned by the judges of the Salon in Paris for being "too erotically suggestive". The disqualification order was subsequently overturned when Napoleon III himself sprung to Chaplin’s defense. During his lifetime, Chaplin was awarded numerous medals at the Salon in Paris and, in 1865, he was declared a Chevalier and later Officer of la Légion d’Honneur (1881). Today his works are held in the collections of the Louvre in Paris, Hermitage in St Petersburg, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15.
Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins.
Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night.
He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art.
Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years.
