About the Item
Victorian Maritime Oil Painting of HMS Ganges anchored off Falmouth with Sailors alighting and on deck with Sailing Boats.
Oil on artists card, laid on board and framed in its original gilt frame.
Exhibited in London at the Institute of Oil Painters in December 1885, exhibit number 616. This painting is signed bottom right hand and dated.
This is an important work, painted "en plein air". In the 1860's HMS Ganges was chosen to be converted to a Naval School and used as a base at which volunteers could be educated for future service in the Navy. In 1866 HMS Ganges was towed into Mylor near Falmouth by the Paddle Tug Gladiator, she was anchored off Garrick Roads which is where this painting was executed and there she remained until 1899. This is an amazing piece of Naval history by Charles Napier Hemy who was widely considered to be the most accomplished Marine Artist of his generation. From 1881 he lived at Falmouth, where in a boat fitted out as a studio, he followed the fishing boats and coastal craft, making sketches as he sailed.
This painting was obviously highly prized by Napier Hemy hence it's inclusion in the 1885 Exhibition at the Institute of Oil Painters, of which he was a member as well as being a Royal Academician.
