About the Item
A superb mid 20th century French naïf oil on canvas coastal landscape by Charles Pincon-Maricourt.
This work depicts the Benediction of the Sea on Hoëdic, an island off the coast of Brittany. It is very similar to a work by the artist "Locronan, La Tromenie Silencieuse" which is featured in the book Guide Naifs de Provinces de France.
In Brittany, the "Bénédiction de la Mer" (Blessing of the Sea) is a traditional ceremony where fishing boats and their crews are blessed by a priest, often in a procession, to ensure safety and a bountiful catch.
This practice is a significant part of Brittany's strong maritime culture and religious heritage, with many coastal towns holding their own unique versions of the ceremony
The work is in very good original condition, signed lower left, inscribed on the reverse and presented in a painted wood frame. A masterpiece of mid 20th century French naïf art which won the silver medal at Paris, according to a label on the reverse.
Charles Pincon-Maricourt is featured in Anatole Jakovsky's ''Peintres Naïfs'', which is considered the bible of 20th century French naïf painters.
Artist: Charles Pincon-Maricourt (French, 1902-1973)
Title: Bénédiction de la Mer
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 25.5 x 30 inches (65 x 76 cm) including the frame
Charles Pincon-Maricourt was a true French naïf painter of the 20th century. A magistrate who became a Justice of the Peace in Mantes la-Joli, then mayor of Guerville, both places in Seine-et-Oise.
He came from a large family and had to start work early in life because of his father's premature death. It was his mother, nee Virginie Maricourt, a cultivated and sensitive woman, who taught him to love nature in all its simplicity.
He remembered his mother when he later began to paint, always using the same motif, in snow or in wind, and this is probably why his snowscapes, for instance, are like childhood dreams realized late in life.
The honesty and sincerity of his work was soon rewarded - he received decorations and honors from several public organisations, including the silver medal of Paris.
