Chérie-Anne-Charles Fargue
'Spring in Provence', Paris, Salon d'Automne, Post-Impressionist Woman Artist

1927

About the Item

Signed lower right 'Cheriane' for Cheri-Anne Charles Fargue, (French, born 1900), and dated, verso, 1927. Provenance: Theophile Briant Gallery, Paris, from old label verso. Frame available (see image #10). Framed Dimensions: 23½ H x 2 D x 31 W Inches A lyrical, early twentieth-century Post-Impressionist landscape, showing a view of a woman reclining on a red blanket beside a country lane winding through cultivated fields at harvest time. A fine and substantial work by this well-listed female member of the first generation of the School of Paris. Cherie-Anne-Charles Fargue first studied with Marie Laurencin at the Ecole de la Ville and, subsequently, at the Academie Julian in Paris. Adopting the pseudonym Chériane, Fargue made her debut at the Salon des Artistes Independants in 1921 and, thereafter, exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, becoming a member in 1925, and at the Salon des Tuileries from the year of its founding. She also exhibited with success internationally including in Prague, New York and Vienna. Favored subjects included female figurative works and nudes as well as landscapes of Provence, where Chériane lived for many years, and of Madagascar, which she visited frequently with her husband, the Academy painter and poet, Leon-Paul Fargue. She also undertook significant public commissions including the monumental mural, entitled 'Music', which decorated the Pavilion of the 1937 Universal Exposition in Paris. Chériane is well-listed in all relevant reference works, including Benezit, and her work is held in the permanent collections of prominent national museums including The Museum of Modern Art (Paris), the Museum of Bordeaux, and the Danish National Museum (Copenhagen) among others. We are pleased to offer this exceptional work from the artist's early period. 'Tea Party', New York Art Students League, Fechin Institute, Santa Fe, Large Oil
By Gregory Frank Harris
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower left, 'Greg Harris' for Gregory Frank Harris (American, born 1953) and dated 1981. Additionally signed, verso, and titled, 'Stea Life in a Pond'. Framed dimensions: 34.5 H x 29.5 W x 2.5 D inches. The study of art and the history of art are closely intertwined in the work of Gregory Frank Harris which reflects his exploration of technique and art history. Born in southern California, Harris and his twin brother grew up in a family that embraced the visual arts as well as theatre and music. During his stint at California State University in Long Beach, he studied both art and theatre, but also began writing music, which then became his primary focus. Over the next decade, Harris and his brother played piano and drums respectively in a variety of bands, earning their living in the nightclubs and hotels up and down the west coast. The first sign of a new direction appeared while the band was on the road in Spokane, Washington where Harris rekindled his interest in painting. Like generations of artists before him, Harris turned to the old masters and the impressionist painters as sources for his study of painting. Harris was fortunate to have two of his copies, Rembrandt’s Woman with Pink and Gainsborough’s Blue Boy, selected as props for the 1982 film version of the musical Annie, directed by John Huston. Harris also began exhibiting at juried shows in 1982 and marketing his work nationally. Juried exhibitions--and awards--followed, including an unprecedented first, second and third place award in the popular vote at the historic Lyme Art...

Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)
By André Hambourg
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky. The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized. Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. It was such a large and important gift that the collection bears...
