About the Item
With a glance, Clifford Kluge’s paintings seize the eye through their fusion of raw, tumultuous forces, a vibrant hymn to Gaia. A dense, mineral surface sets the scene: rust, orange, and green tones accumulate like geological strata. As if traced in thin white chalk, two human figures stand on either side of a central tree, with their backs to each other, moving in opposite directions.
Their postures mirror one another, each connected to the central tree by a red line that could symbolize an umbilical cord, binding them to the terrestrial womb. The white outlines of the figures, like threads from a ball of yarn, extend from either side of the scene, weaving into the landscape as if to stitch humanity and nature into an inseparable whole. The figures are schematic, minimalist, glyph-like, recalling cave art or children’s drawings.
The upper third dissolves into an atmospheric haze of oxidized reds and muted yellows, flattening the depth to bring the eye back to the surface. A double border, like a tapestry frame or an illuminated manuscript, encloses this vision.
Kluge does not paint a landscape: he roots it in the bowels of Mother Earth, intertwining geological memory, symbolic order, and personal myth into a bold composition, offered to the viewer to project their truth.
