About the Item
Bodies traced in a single gesture, as if scribbled on the wall of a cave or a child's slate. In this gouache by Clifford Kluge, the figures are made up of their contours alone, lines that connect, continuing from one to the next.
The arm of one becomes the arm of another, or the leg of a third, each being dependent on the momentum of the previous one to exist. In places, these forms resemble branches: trees, roots, an underground network of vital connections.
The work organizes a space where living beings form a whole. There is no hierarchy, no center. What prevails is circulation. An underground energy, red, green, ochre, as if all of humanity were inscribed in a single beat.
The drawing seems naive, but this is precisely where Kluge excels, reaching the heart through the clarity of form. In this disarming simplicity, we are reminded of something: living is not a matter of solitude. As form embraces color and line embraces breath, the work whispers: «I recognize myself in you, and you recognize yourself in me.»
