"Ole Swimmin Hole" Southern California Oil on canvas board 1930s Elegant mid century landscape depicting a lake and hillside in summer by well known and collected California artist Clyde Eugene Scott (American, 1884-1959). c.1930s. From a southern California estate collection. Reeds in a cool pond with rippling water and a dry hillside in the background. A master of his medium Clyde Scott's paintings are sought after and prized. We have owned 4 others by the artist and this is our loveliest new addition. the artists personal studio label is affixed on verso and titled in the artists hand. We certify and guarantee the work to be by the hand of Clyde Eugene Scott and the paint has not been retouched or modified. Signed "Clyde Scott" lower left. Clyde Scott Studio label on verso with title "Ole Swimmin hole". #1256 Presented in the original rustic giltwood frame. Image size: 16"H x 20"W. Frame size, 20.5"H x 24.5"W x 1.5"D Clyde Scott established his studio near Los Angeles at Chatsworth and took extensive painting trips into Arizona, Utah and throughout California. Active in the California Art Club, artists' organizations in Laguna Beach and Santa Monica and the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles. A Southern California landscape artist, Clyde Eugene Scott was born in Bedford, Iowa and headed West in 1910, having studied in Boston with Richard Andrews and Charles Heil at the Boston Museum School and with E. Felton Brown at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Until 1933, he worked for the Commercial Art Company in San Francisco and lived across the Bay in Mill Valley. Then he moved to Los Angeles and became a special effects artist at 20th Century Fox Studios until 1950 when he retired and devoted himself full time to painting desert landscapes. He established his studio near Los Angeles at Chatsworth where landscape was often filmed for western movies. He took extensive painting trips into Arizona and Utah and throughout California and became active in the California Art Club, plein-air landscape painters as well as in arts organizations in Laguna Beach and Santa Monica and the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles, which he served as President from 1938 to 1940. He was fascinated by natural forms and changing atmosphere, and these subjects are reflected in his many desert landscapes.
