About the Item
An accomplished American Scene painter, Clyde Singer successfully captured everyday life during his long career. A unique aspect of American life is depicted in this painting, entitled Women's City Club (1944), where he paints an outsider's view into a female domain. Women's clubs were founded to encourage interest and participation in civic affairs. They could be found in small and large cities, including Cleveland, Cincinnati, and New York, where Singer frequently captured images of American life. Based on the inscription en verso, this club is likely to have been in Youngstown, OH. In this image, he paints from the perspective of an outsider looking into this female space. This provides an interesting contrast to the artist's frequent paintings of the historic McSorley's Bar in New York City. Women were not admitted into McSorely's Bar prior to 1970, and Singler frequently captured the all-male gathering space from the inside with a view of women passing on the street just outside the doorway.
This painting is executed in oil paint on canvas board. It is signed by the artist in the lower left and dated 1944, as well as inscribed en verso "Women's City Club" with gallery label.
Framed in a wide pickled finish frame.

Born in Malvern, Ohio, forty miles south of Akron, Clyde Singer became known for his regionalist paintings in oil and watercolor of everyday landscapes and people. In 1933, he was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. It was during the Depression, and he lived a Spartan existence. His teachers included John Steuert Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and Ivan Olinsky. Adopting the Social Realist style, he tried to paint in the same locations as George Bellows and John Sloan, and he painted many scenes of the interior of McSorley's famous saloon that Sloan had depicted. He had a long history with the Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH.
