About the Item
'Sacred Light (Sacre Coeur, Paris)' is a large horizontal representational oil on canvas painting of Sacre Coeur and Montmartre in Paris created by American artist Craig Mooney in 2022. Featuring an exquisite palette mostly made of French gray, gren, blue and cream tones, accented with touches of neutrals and white, the painting depicts a birds eye viwe of Sacre Coeur seated atop Montmantre overlooking the city of Paris represented through an atmospheric lens that is best described as dreamlike. We are left admiring a view of the greatest city in the world, complete with iconic Parisian rooftops. It looks like the city is flying right by, as if you were glancing at it from inside a moving train. Great importance is given to the sky, and the basilica, with its warm accents and delicate clouds. It seems like the light is shining directly on the top of the hill where the church is. Parisian buildings and the light shining from the sky leads your eye up to composition to the focal point of the church. The result is a stunning depiction of an idyllic city, that will enliven any wall beautifully, perhaps placed above a sofa, console table or enfilade. Unframed, this oil on canvas is signed lower right.
We've had a crush on Craig Mooney's large and light-filled paintings for quite a while so it was a very happy day here at the gallery when we hung his gorgeous work on our gallery walls. We just can't seem to drag our eyes away from his magical skies, verdant lands and shimmery waterways. And, although Craig is widely recognized as a representational painter, we're drawn to the abstract elements in his work, especially in his urban-set paintings which feel a little mysterious but always familiar. We're pulled to the dreamy, atmospheric qualities of his work and of course, his soft-as-air palette that makes the paintings simply sing.
Craig was born and raised in the heart of midtown Manhattan (NY) and his roots in art go back to his youth. His father, an amateur artist, taught him how to create oil paintings from discarded art supplies found on city streets. To Mooney, the city was an endless source of inspiration from an early age. Even though Craig took art classes in both in high school and college, he regards this early exposure as the truest form of training he ever received.

Craig Mooney
Born and raised in the heart of midtown Manhattan, New York, Craig Mooney’s roots in art go back to his youth. His father, an amateur artist, taught him how to create oil paintings from discarded art supplies found on city streets. To Mooney, the city was an endless source of inspiration at an early age. Though he would later take classes in art both in high school and college, he regards this early exposure as the truest form of training he had ever received. After a brief career in the film industry, Mooney moved out of New York in the mid-90s to rural Vermont. The open and bucolic settings of the countryside allowed Mooney new sources of inspiration. Mooney makes paintings of dramatic moments and heightened emotionality that is known for being expansive and expressive. Though a representational painter, he incorporates a myriad of abstract qualities throughout his paintings. In his figurative work, Mooney romanticizes his subjects and presents them in an atmospheric lens that is best described as dreamlike. His paintings appear to be capturing a moment suspended in time. While his work feels familiar, it is not specific. Rather it is, on a very basic level, the symbolism of what could have been had been or will be. Today, Mooney devotes himself full time to his art at his studio in Vermont.
