The city becomes an abstracted tapestry of light, colour, and movement.
The reflective street surface captures the neon blaze above, creating a sense of continuity between the ground and the towering façades. The tight composition and energetic texture give the impression of standing in the very centre of Times Square, surrounded by the chaos and beauty of its nocturnal spectacle. Castan’s style merges representation with abstraction, allowing the viewer’s imagination to complete the scene.
Taxi - Manhattanhenge is more than a visual record — it’s a sensory immersion. The interplay of light and texture makes the work almost audible, as if the buzz of traffic and chatter could spill from the canvas.
Artist Biography:
Born in 1959 in Dordogne, Daniel Castan draws from a very young age. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Bordeaux. When he was 40 years old, he started painting again just for the pure pleasure of it. At age 48, he left everything to follow his dreams. At the beggining of his professional life Daniel Castan travelled a lot to New York and Hong Kong. He had a special fascination for the urban world and their exaggerated perspectives. In his paintings, he tries to recreate these graphic environments. The lines of the buildings get lost in the sky, the long avenues seem endless, the colors collide. The artist works direclty from his memories and imagination. Daniel Castan chose to paint with alkyd oil. This kind of oil works just like classical oil, but the binder in it, is a kind of resin that allows accelerated drying. His favorite tool is the knife, it allows him to work with paste, and to draw in different materials.
