About the Item

Daniel Ridgway Knight was born in Philadelphia on March 13, 1839. Growing up in this culturally rich city, he became attracted to the visual arts during his adolescent years. He studied at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts during the 1850s and helped to establish the Philadelphia Sketch Club, a highly respected informal group of young and talented artists. However, Knight, like many other young American artists of this period, soon longed to experience the rich artistic heritage and cultural vitality of Paris. In 1861 Knight made his first trip to Paris. Once there he quickly became involved in the arts community. He studied under one of the most celebrated painters of his day, Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre (1808-1874), only returning to his native Philadelphia during the Civil War years to assist with the war effort. When he returned to France he began studying with the acclaimed historical painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891). Meissonier was extremely helpful to the young American painter and encouraged him to submit his works to the Salon. A close relationship developed between the older Frenchman and the young American, and Knight moved his study to Poissy where Meissonier had his studio (Poissy was a quiet suburban village on the Seine northwest of Paris which also was frequently visited by Monet and Pissarro). Here, in this tranquil and picturesque setting, Knight found a wealth of interesting subject matter which included earthy French peasants and the glorious countryside. Due to the mild climate he was able to work en plein-air in the tradition of the Impressionists and the celebrated painters Jules Breton (1827-1905) and Jules Bastian Le Page (1848-1884). Knight also traveled extensively throughout Normandy and Brittany. He would execute preliminary studies in these locales and refine them in his Poissy studio. Knight’s studio and technique were vividly described by Henry Bacon in his book Parisian Art and Artists.
