Pupukea/Kam Hwy Intersection

About the Item

This painting show a section of the Kamehameha Highway on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The road is named after the last king of Hawaii and runs along the entire island. "That day, I went out to paint after one of the frequent rains that happen almost daily on the island year-round," said Daria Molostnova about this painting. "Beautiful clouds appeared in the sky are were reflected in the puddles on the wet pavement. Parked cars are visible in the foreground, capturing an everyday moment on Oahu’s North Shore." The painting is done in oil on American canvas, hand-stretched on a wooden stretcher. It was created using professional French and Italian paints and finished with a protective Italian varnish. It looks best in a wide dark frame with gold accents. This painting is perfect for a wall you look at often - such as in a home office or dining area. It brings a sense of freshness, clean air after ruin, quiet joy, and calm presence. Daria Molostnova lives and works in Hawaii, where she discovered the true beauty of the surrounding world. Her paintings reflect the local reality, expressed through her personal cultural code. A graduate of the Russian State University of Design and Applied Arts named Stroganoff, she earned her master's degree, blending the traditions of classical education with a contemporary artistic perspective. Daria grew up in a family of professional artists, her mother being a renowned designer and lead doll artist of the Soviet Union. Since 1997, Daria has been a member of the Moscow Union of Artists, and since 1998, a member of the International Union of Journalists. She has taught at the Russian-Italian Art School Perotti and the Correspondence People's University of Arts. She has conducted numerous workshops both in Russia and abroad, as well as team-building activities for companies such as Harpers Bazaar, Mercedes, and Coca-Cola. Daria has participated in international artist residencies in such countries as Bosnia, France, and Italy. She is a participant in many Russian and international art fairs, competitions, and exhibitions. Currently, she collaborates with galleries in Hawaii and California. Her works are held in several Russian museums, as well as in private collections both in Russia and abroad. Daria's paintings are a fusion of flawless craftsmanship and a vivid sense of life that her work conveys. This is a Real Place! 1: large painting of lake or river w/ blue water & bridge
By Brooke Lanier
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"In the series “This is a real place!” I was fascinated by how the underside of the pier at Saint Simons Island, GA was like a readymade collage. The way the pilings and rails divide and frame the spaces between them looks artificially imposed on the scene until you notice the way the waves bounce off the pilings and the railings cast shadows on the water. In some iterations, I chose to simplify the structures of the pier and lighten the values so that it would emphasize the detail in the water. Likewise, I omitted a family of starlings and their droppings in favor of highlighting the geometry of the architecture and the colors and patterns of the water. Making paintings in a series allows me to investigate the results of making different decisions about an image. How I crop or stylize it, the manner in which I apply the paint, what gets included or excluded all add shades of meaning to each piece. Additionally, depictions of the same subject in different weather, seasons, times of day, and tides allows me a deeper understanding. I notice more relationships, colors, and details every time I paint the subject. Every painting is a pile of decisions. Playing with removing more and more details to see what is truly important sometimes improves the painting. The fewer elements you include in an image, the more each one means, and the more important it is to get each thing perfect. At times I like to paint every single detail I can find in a scene, and other times I feel like the unadorned components are sufficient to hold each other in a satisfying composition. I often add simplified shapes to my paintings to highlight the presence of absence or to heighten the importance of each area by creating stark visual contrasts. The physicality of the paint also plays a role. I used highly textured, thickly applied paint to construct the solid structural elements, and luminous layers of thinly glazed paint for the delicate linework and subtle blending of the water." - Brooke Lanier...
